tranny question

will an S5 T2 manual tranny fit on my s5 GTU? I was wondering because the syncro in my fifth is going out so I was going to go to a stronger tranny.

From what I understand for an S5 TII tranny to fit your GTU you would also need TII flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and driveshaft. These are the minimum requirements and you would still need to have your GTU driveshaft mated with the TII. If this is not an option you could then get a TII differential and half-shafts too, then it would be a complete swap-out.

Correct me if I'm wrong folks...I think this is how it goes...

And the starter and slave cylinder as well. So as it will fit, it's not a direct bolt-on.

I thought I was told/read that the LSD/diff from the GTU was the saughtafter LSD that other models switched to?

Nope.

The 88 GTU had a LSD
The 89-90 GTUs (note the small "s"- don't confuse with a GTU) had a LSD

The 89-90 GTU and GXL did not come with a LSD>

Please read the FAQ for FC sticky thread... it covers what models came with a LSD

damn, I thought I was special there for a moment. So is it worth modding to put a s5 T2 tranny on it? Will there be any gain?

How do you mean???

The R type tranny as found on the Turbo and several Ford products won't give you any more performance as it is gear'd almost the same. It is heavy duty when comparied to the M type trannies found on the non turbo FC, but that is its only advantage.

And unless you are running considerably more power than stock or you are a crappy driver that needs help shifting, there is no real reason to switch to a R type tranny on a Non turbo FC.

But even if you switch... it won't give you more power, or better gearing or any other performance advantage.
