tranny issues...

A few months back I put in an RB aluminum flywheel (a great mod BTW) for my NA. I noticed last week a rather loud whirring/churning noise from the tranny that comes and goes and is only noticeable at idle. The noise goes away when the clutch pedal is in and sometimes you can feel a vibration in the car at idle whether the clutch pedal is in or not. The vibration seems worse with the pedal in and the shifter in a gear. SO, basically I think my tranny is shot since the pilot bearing and thowout bearing are new when I put in the RB flywheel. Is is possible to eat throught those that quickly and or could one of them be faulty? Also, anyone got an NA tranny that runs smooth and quiet they'd send to NY cheap? The car still shifts and drives perfectly regardless of the come and go noises...

Sorry no comment on the operation of the tranny other than I'm on my seccond and it's starting to do that same thing all over again. Let me tell you it will get a lot worse. It's probably best just to have the whole thing rebuilt instead of putting another used one in.

When i got my 88 in january, I had no problems till my pilot bearing went out. I had a new clutch put in with a new pilot and throwout bearing. Since then I have the exact same vibration (quite faint) with the clutch pedal and in gear. The good news is that the vibration gets a lot less in a month or two. Now it only happens very slightly the first time I put the car in gear and only in first. Also, I did not get a whirring noise but a clicking noise at idle which goes away with a the pedal pushed in 1/2" or so. It only happens every now and then and I am sure i can adjust the pedal for that. In short, I don't think it is the tranny at all but I could be wrong....

New pilot bearing?
Who did the work?
If the trans was man-handled, it could't damaged the new pilot bearing...

Agreed, but why would the symptoms be getting better? Also, if the pilot was damaged, I would have tough time shifting. My only problem is notchy shifting at the moment.

Failing pilot bearing will keep the trans from shifting...

hehe, i did the work the transmission shifts great, smooth as ever. I just think the tranny is goin south...what do you think it could be from what I've decribed and how long do you think it has? I got a handle on a '91 NA tranny tonight that'd cost me 360 shipped from a guy I've gotten a lotta parts from before, very trustworthy and it only takes me an hour and a half to swap the tranny...I can't deal with laying the car up for a rebuild so now maybe I'll have a core to rebuild if I ever need it. My last tranny DIED right after I put the centerforce ina couple years back so we tossed that one. Will the '91 tranny bolt to my '88 NA without problems?

That sounds just like mine, I'm pretty sure it's stuffed bearings. You can hear it when idling because the input shaft, with it's dodgy bearings, is spinning at engine speed. When you step on the clutch, the gearbox is disconnected and the input shaft stops spinning, so it goes quiet.
