Question Timing troubles

Im haveing a problem setting the timing in my new t2 motor... correct me if im wrong but as far as i know your supposed to line up the leading (yellow) mark on the pulley and the line up the notches on the CAS then you stab it....when i do this the motor does start ok but when i put the timing light on it i can turn the CAS the whole way and it still wont line up the mark correctlly and its like a quarter inch away from lineing up right..ive restabed it like 5 times and ive had the same results..has anyone had this problem?any help would be greatly apreciated this is really driving me crazy!!

could this be caused by the idle being to high when im using the timing light?

dude you may have to pull the CAS all the way out and re -align the gear at the bottom and then put it back in and try for new timing.

The idle HAS TO BE under 1000rpm but closer to 750 the better. The engine should be fully warmed up also imho.

IF the idle is below 1000rpm and the engine hot, then just remove the cas and restab it one gear off from what you had.

BETTER: pull the cas out. Pull off the black top cover. Align the bottom gear marks. Stare into the top of the cas. Once you stab it, the top arrangement should look identical to what you see now. If not, then turn the cas body til it does. Still can't turn the cas body enough? PUll it out and move over one tooth and restab til you get it right.

Still won't worK????? Is this a rebuilt motor???????? Need answer.

sorry guys if been sick for a few days......ive tried restabing it with the cover off and im sure that its linieing up right cause i have the tooth up top marked and when i stab it it does move slightly but i belive thats normal from what ive heard....the car starts up fine its a rebuilt atkins motor and almost all externals are new also....the problem im having is just getting the mark to line up with the timing light and the motor is backfiring and i have poor throttle response so that kinda leads me to belive the timing is off. my idle is around 1000 and when i try to bring it down at the adjustment screw it does nothing even if i tighten or losen it the whole way? sorry 4 the delayed response i appreciate the help!

You have to get that idle down, otherwise you are feeding adjustment into the timing mix via the ECU.

********8off and im sure that its linieing up right cause i have the tooth up top marked and when i stab it it does move slightly but i belive thats normal from what ive *********888

So you turn the body til the cas looks just like it did before you installed it. I don't get it.

We're ASSUMING that you aligned the front pulley prior to installing the cas.

Also try either installing the initial set coupler OR remove the electrical plug from the BAC to see if you can get the idle down.

ok i think i figured out some of the problem but first off i am lining up the leading mark on the pulley before i stab it and when i dissconect the BAC it makes no differnce in the idle speed neither does the adjustment screw does that mean the BAC is no good? anyway i was looking at my SAFC2 in the throttle position monitor and i noticed it was reading tlike 25 % throttle when my foot wasnt even on the peddle so i adjusted the screw for the TPS and that made the timing mark line up somehow i dont yet have a ohm meter to dial it in perfect but at least the timing mark is now lined up...do u guys think that was the problem?
