timing...

I was wondering about the timing on an RX-7...what is in charge of the timing and how is it kept track of.

I am just wondering because I want to put in an upgraded ignition system and wanted to know what all is involved. (Probably MSD or Jacobs, I just don't want to increase fuel/air and HP and fuel computer without increasing ignition capability).
