TII Conversion
First: Yes I've Searched.
I want to convert my '86 GXL to a TII engine so I have some damn power. Few questions: How much boost can it run stock? How can I make it handle more boost? How much and from where can I get the parts required (and what parts are all required)?
Thanks, and please don't flame, I really did search.

Exactly
Unless you can find a wrecked TII, sell the GXL and use the money towards a good TII. Save money and bruised knuckles.
Only retrofit that makes sense is a Vert TII conversion as they never imported that beauty. So, only way to get one is to make one.

and that is just what I am going to do to mine
and maybe he loves his car
or has payments and cannot sell it for any appreciable amount, or just plain wants to do it. maybe he has money in other things and now wants the engine.

I did a jspec conversion on my NA. I already had done a lot of work to the car and plus it was my first car, I had it for almost 5 years so I figured what the hell.
the out of pocket cost was about $1500. I sold off most of my NA parts to help make some money back.

still say its not worth it. even if he loves the car, even if he cant afford an actual T2(you can always save) i dont care, its not worth it. just buy the T2. there is absolutley no reason to go through all the trouble of swapping all that stuff over if the whole turbo car is readily available to buy. it just doesnt make sense....ever.

OK, in fairness
I guess it's like asking the mountain climber why he climbed Mount Everest. Answer...."Because it's there."
I'm big on the retro-fit thing myself. But, with the TII you get the extra things that go along with the TII.... big brakes, stronger drivetrane engine through third member, aluminum hood, 16" wheels, etc etc. And, the cost of the pieces always exceed the cost of the whole.
Anyway, enjoy the project and good luck with the conversion.

Hozz, GXL's had the big brakes already. The conversion isn't as expensive as everyone thinks it is, nor as hard. And it's damn fun too, not to mention you get to learn a lot about the car as you do it. I dropped a 13BT in my 89 GXL, and it cost a hell of a lot less than it would've cost me to buy a Turbo2 around here. Not to mention the stuff I learned in doing so. Anyway, if you're up for it and got time, do it, else do as they say

Oh, I've done alot of homework in preparaton...
to do a TII retro-fit. Don't get me wrong. It is in my Vert's future. Just looking for the right donor TII.
What with replacing my engine, electricals repair work due to an engine fire (yup, dreaded pulsation damper), clutch work, and third member replacement, I've pretty well got a dry run for that work under my belt.
And, I give that the education you get from doing projects like this gives the common ground for so many discussions we have here. Hell, probably why most of us ARE here. Also, the satisfaction when you finish and start it up the first time. Better than drugs.
So, like I said. Enjoy the project. And be sure and report back as you progress.

Approximately how LONG does it take to transfer all that junk over to an NA anyhow? Let's say, for example, a S5 GTU? couple of weeks? Months? assuming it's a weekend project type thing, and one's never done it before... =P

If everything went like planned for us, and we didn't have a blown motor to start with, our conversion would've only taken a week, working 4 hours a day at most.

i want to do one too...except my vision of an FC is a lil' different
this is my plan:
buy a base-model late (89-91) FC, then buy a J-Spec TII engine and drop it in.
i just wanted to know the differences between the two models. i dont mean minor differences, but major differences that may set me back.
the reason why i want to build this thing is because i want the experience of doing so....dontchu know? i'm a madscientist.

just buy a T2. I feel I have a intimate relationship with my car from head to toe, which few people can say. Even fewer with rotaries.
Plus, if you had my NA. You would not have wanted to replace it. My GXL had perfect new Brilliant Black paint w/ clearcoat, straight body, rims and spotless interior. You just can't throw a car like that away.
