Front mount on the differential. Its broke. Its causing the front of the differential to piviot on its two rear mounts and rise up and bang the bottom of the floor. Theres a picture in the online factory service manual, of the mount and its location. Have fun.

It will put stress on the other diff mounts and excessive strain on the driveshaft. The shaft will wear out much quicker, and the othe mounts may break. Replace it before the problem gets worse. The mount is cheap (all things considered) but it is a pain in the *** to get to.

The problem is that the rear subframe has to be dropped to get to the mount. Easily a 6 hour job for someone who hasen't done it before.

I her you can tie a chain around it and weld the chain and it does the job but thats a lil bit cheezy but it does the job easier. what do you guys think have you herd that?

i don't know about the welding thing, it would just be smarter to get a new one. mazdatrix has a competition one that is sposed to be stronger than the factory one(which they also have). i just ordered one for my car, and fc3az also got one too. he replaced his in about 2 1/2 hrs and has never done it before, so it can't be that hard of a job. but i will soon find out.

You guys are right about buying the stronger one but if your going to the trouble of installign it might as well just weld the diff to the mount and you never have to worry about them comng apart or breaking. but every car is differnt i could be wrong.

damnit. My car does that too. Not everytime, but it does go thud when I put it in gear. Oh well, it's my dad's car, not mine.

Yeah. I have the same problem too, at times. Going into reverse, backing up then switching to 1st gear. I'm pretty sure it's not the diff. mount or anything.. or it'd be doing it everytime like he said on his first post.

Though... anytime I switch gears, I get a loud crack noise....clutch is all the way in... but it's werid, and I dunno.

Sounds pretty stupid to me. There needs to be some flex or you could damage the subframe and possibly more parts. Id rather blow a mount than tear my subframe.

Try to get your hands on two jacks and jackstands. Helps to hold and lower the subframe when getting at the diff mount. Also helps to have a friend. Night before doing the job, spray all the bolts with wd40. WestJaxVert and I did the diff mount on my old sport in about 2 hours. Some of the bolts on the mount are pretty annoying to get to.
