Throttle cable jamming?

Well, it's been a while since I've posted about an issue with a 7 since I got my RX-8, but I digress.

I just came into possession of an 87 TII. It has its quirks, but this one is pretty dominate right now, as I can hardly drive it. I can push the pedal down 1/2 way, 1/4 way, anyway and the cable is A-OK. But when it gets pushed down to 3/4 -> all the way, it sticks...lifting the pedal doesn't relieve it, I have to go under the hood and pull the cable manually.

While playing with the TB, I can pull the cable as hard as I want, and it will never stick. To me, that seems like a problem from the where the cable goes through the firewall to the engine bay and somewhere in there. I can pull on a piece of rubber held on the cable with a clamp and it will relieve the stick...but I have to be pulling with some force.

I will include some pictures whenever I can get them off the camera, but for now...has anybody seen anything like this, and am I just being a big newb and it IS the TB? I've sprayed WD-40 in a few locations *where the wire goes into the firewall, the TB..* and it hasn't relieved it. I'm starting to get a bit confused. I searched around, but the biggest help I could find from it was "get a new cable" but that's my last ditch effort....is there a chance the cable is stuck on something inside the protected rubber/plastic?

In all likelyhood your cable is frayed inside. The solution is replacing the cable.

Hmm, I guess I'll have to find a DIY on replacing it....hopefully it's not too hard.

Unless there is a less of a hassle way to fix a frayed cable? :p

NOTE, it wasn't doing this two days ago, and just started yesterday....but resolved itself after spraying some WD-40. Now i can't seem to resolve.

If someone can find a DIY on replacing a throttle cable, that would rock.

Some time ago, my throttle cable was sticking such that it would never idle below 3000. The sheathing was ripped open and the cable itself was rusted and prevented it from shutting all the way. After replacing the cable, problem was solved. Perhaps your situation is similar.

Jpk, do you have/know where a DIY is located on changing out the cable? Is it difficult to get it through the firewall to the pedal? Seems like it would be a hassle.

Hmm, can't edit post.

Well, I'll just say I've got it fixed, and I see what the issue is. I only did a hob *** fix, but a new cable will need to be put in sooner or later. Pix to come.

Sadly I do not. The hardest part about changing out the cable was forking out the ~$55 for the new one.

And I would say that your cable has definitely seen better days. I hope your results turn out as good as mine did.

It's fairly easy to change. The most annoying part is removing the clip that holds it to the firewall. You'll see when you pull it out. Hard to do with limited visibility.

You might need two people to help you out. You can get a turbo throttle cable on ebay for about 50 dollors.

Just unhook it and pull it through your firewall.

Thanks for the help, gang. I haven't really "measured" it, so I thought I May have to 'maze' it though the firewall. If it's a straight shot, won't be too bad. I'll fix my tire problem, then the throttle cable, then the turbo/coolant leak problem THANKS AGAIN!
