Think I have FB coils on my FC. Why? (I searched)
Ok, I did search on this, but all I found were lots of people putting FC coils on an FB. (Which makes more sense.) I'm hoping somebody might have some ideas, and that I don't sound too crazy.
I'll just get to the question.
Can anybody think of a good reason to put FB coils and ignitors onto an FC?
My car certainly does not have FC coils on it, and near as I can tell, they are FB. A pair of cylinders sitting side by side, attached to the strut tower.
Given the build of the car, I have to assume they are there for a reason, but I'm stumped. I've given a bit more info below for those who feel it will help solve the mystery.
Backstory: I recently bought an 86 FC chassis road-race car that had not been run in a few years. I'm in the process of re-conditioning for this season.
Previous owner had the engine extensively built, but is not mechanical at all, so can't tell me any info about why things are the way they are.
Briefly: Engine was converted from FI to Weber side-draft carb w/ Racing Beat manifold, bridge ported, from what I understand Turbo irons were used and lots more stuff the owner couldn't remember. It hit 270hp on the engine dyno at about 7600rpm and it was running VPRacing C12 w/ 70:1 or so Premix. (No OMP)
Engine had 1 out-lap put on it after the above build (he had the engine rebuilt for last race, took it out, blew the clutch on his out-lap on the new motor, took the car home, put a new clutch in, and that was about it. He'd driven it around his property a few times since just to keep things loose.)
I'm trying to get the contact info for the guy who built the motor, and I'm hoping he'll remember why he did what he did a few years back. But, anybody else with any ideas before that, would be great.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

They are black with no writing.
I have a couple of sets of FC coils (race car came with 2 parts cars) but before I swapped them on, I felt it was probably best to investigate why they were on there to begin with.

There are first gen coils in your car because your car was converted from FI. It's easier to swap to a first gen distributor and coils than trying to make the foctory FC ignition work because it requires an ECU, TPS, and whatever else. And just for your information, dont swap the factory coils with aftermarket MSDs. Factory first gen coils recharge faster for the higher RPM

Wow. Now I feel dumb. Seems painfully obvious now that you say it.
I have lots of spare FC coils. I'll have to look at some of the FB threads on converting FC coils to work with their ignition.
Thanks!

There are no real gains experienced from the DFIS swap into an FB. Some people claim smoother acceleration, but it could be a perception issue. Most people say there's no difference, other than a more cluttered engine bay.

Good feedback. I'll have to research more.
I'm mostlyinterested in getting the FC coils to work since I have 3 sets of those, and no spare sets of FB coils. (and I've noticed some sparks jumping between the connectors on the FB coils, so I don't think those are in tip-top shape.)

it gives it better gas mileage, and is very easy to wire up.(FC coil) at least for the leading. my buddies and i have never done it to the trailing. the mileage isnt like 10 MPG or anything, but it is a noticable difference. if you have an extra coil, id say go for it.

ive seen someone put fc trailing coils to work with a distributor, i have no clue as to if this is better or not.
i have a distributor and coil setup in my fc, and heres my perspective.
when i had the fc fi ign setup, the car has 8 mpg - 10 mpg (depends on highway or local) no power after 7krpm (no matter how i set up the cid) i believe this is due to lack to timing adjustment without the tps, etc...
after i put in the distributor setup, ive notice a 11-14 mpg rate, same feel until after 7krpm, my buttdyno told me to slow down when it hit past 7k, but unforutunately i blew my clutch at 8500 a few months later.
so thats my live experience in this department.
hope this helps.
i run a mikuni sidedraft.
