using carb cleaner to start a bum fire when taking a break from working on a car....bad idea

shaking a torque converter in the air as a trophy after a painstaking engine swap on a 240...not such a great idea

trying to break bolts with oily, greasy hands.....very bad idea if you would like to be able to use your hands later, ouch lol

When welding anything to the underside of the car, take the time to remove the interior carpet first.

I have one. When welding under the car, don't lay on the ground line or lay it on you.

Here is a major one:

When you are putting together and engine, TAKE YOUR TIME.
When you can't find a seal, don't assume it fell on the floor and you will find it later.
If the engine doesn't seem like its bolting together right, it probably isn't.
And finally, when the engine doesn't turn, DON'T FORCE IT.

My dad doesn't listen so I watched him every moment as I let him work on my old car... until he installed new glass for the door window. I redid his shoddy work on the window, rolled it up and locked the car. Problem solved.

when removing your transmission, make sure its secured to the tranny jack so it doesn't roll off the jack on to your chest and the shifter turret pours used gear oil into your ear. Yeah . . . good times.

NEVER work on the alt without removing the battery. I loosend the bolts that held the alt on, the alt came down with the charge wire still on it and touched the block. I heard a pop and was out an engine fuse.

Don't put the transmission in first and pull the shifter out. I did that last night after stuffing my driveshaft in columbus (to deter theft) and can't get it back in now

I've learned there is NO such thing as quick mod or repair on a FC! set at least an hour aside, even for the most basic task.

make sure you have enough spare money for a backup plan if your back yard rebuild fails you...

Never rush. Only causes mistakes that take longer to fix then the time you may have saved.

If the bolt isn't turning, get a bigger wrench.

If the bolt isn't turning, pull, don't push.

Heat works well too, but not on aluminum.

Never use impact tools on bolts in aluminum.

It's generally best NOT to race your daily driver.

Antifreeze doesn't taste good. Transmission fluid doesn't taste good. Brake fluid doesn't taste good. Motor oil does taste good, but it gives you the runs.

If someone says "Hold this spark plug wire while I crank the engine, I want to hear you scream," it's best not to listen to them.

While it may shine well, engine oil is not the best thing to put on tires.

Port jobs are best left to those who have knowledge, good experience, proper tools, and who aren't inebriated.

And if you're too drunk to undertip, you're too drunk to work on your car.

And if you touch your plug wires while it is running and promptly find yourself dreuling... You need new plug wires...

if Only i had found this post saturday morning.... before arching my wrench between the alt. postive and the engine...

Not an FC thing but never under any circumstances take a 3 foot breaker bar with about a foot of extensions attatched to the main pully on your honda accord resting on a jack standand jump up and down on it. Your 260lbs self on the end of a 3 foot breaker bar creates some major inertia. when you slip off of the bar and it snaps back it will come off the extensions fly about 50 feet in the air and come smashing through the windsheild of your nissan pickup truck sitting 15 feet away in the drive way. At least thats what I hear.

If you are using movable ramps to get under your car that you backed onto the ramps, dont forget that you have the car in first gear with your friend standing behind the car when you start the car...they do get airborne ha ha

when putting a motor back make sure you have the fuel lines and all the vacuum lines in place before you put the uim back, i got it wrong and had to take the stupid thing off like 4 or 5 damn times before i got it right.

also carb cleaner melts paint. brake fluid melts paint and most of the fluids dont taste very good.

not on the fc but you dont know discomfort untill you have to lie on top of a little 3 cylinder diesel to remove the trans from the boat. it sucked there was water every where. and if you drop your tools when working on a boat the dont just end up on the ground. either in the drink or some dark unreachable place.
