thermostat problem, possible big issue?

im looking at buying this 1989 n/a vert. its very nice, very clean, the only thing that scared me is that he said it has a broken thermostat and makes it want to overheat, and he was going to take it out this weekend. if its removed is it still going to affect things? how easy would it be to replace? i dont wanna risk blowin it up right after i buy it cause i drove it 5 miles home and its screwed up.

It's like any other vehicle, it keeps the car running at operating temperature.
If it's stuck closed, your motor will DEFINATELY overheat.
If you don't have one, you'll never reach operating temperature ever...
All you do is remove the thermostat housing with two bolts. Careful, you will spill fluid probably.
Replace with fresh gasket
Put on
Bleed system if needed
All simple!

I think a thermostat is probably going to be less than 20$. I'd just buy one and throw it on there.. 20 minutes tops.

By the way. Only use OEM thermostats. Don't use after market brands as those are inaccurate and don't work well.

If he's going to pull out the thermostat why don't you show up with a new one and put it right back in?
No sense in doing the job twice and if the new thermostat doesn't fix the overheating, you'll know before taking possession of the car.
