My temp gauge hasn't worked since i got my car its an 88 gxl i switched the wiring harness and i'm wondering if that would have messed something up. Everything else works. The wiring harness is out of a 86 se.

That's the emissions harness, of which the sender wire is a part of. Do what Calio 64 said first and make sure the connector is on the sender nice & tight...Should be a yellow single wire going to it...

Look to the left and below your oil filter- the big bulb-looking thingy is your oil pressure sender, and should have a single yellow/red wire going to it. Just to the left of it, you should see a small cylindrical sensor sticking out with a male bullet terminal on the end. This is your water temp sender, and it should have a single yellow/white wire with a female bullet connector going to it. If you or a previous owner removed/replaced this sender, and used teflon tape on the threads, it might have lost its ground on the housing, causing your problems. If the wire is there, check the threads next. If that's all good, start looking at your gauge cluster and connectors at the cluster. If your fuel gauge is working, then you should have power at the temp gauge also, as they share a common feed...
