Tachometer: Redline

I have a 1991 Rx7. It used to be automatic but the previous owner converted it to manual. Here's the problem 1991 N/A is supposed to redline at 8000 and the tach itself is supposed to go up to 9000.......well mine r/l at 7000 and only goes up to 8000.......i'll get pictures of this as soon as i can and any help would be appreciated.

sounds like a s4 gauge cluster (or whole car) cluster might have been swaped in when converting to manual

Yep, auto trannies couldn't handle the 8000K redline.

Only the S5 non turbo, with a manual transmission got the 8000K redline.

im doing a manual tranny swap on an auto engine, so can the engine itself handle the redline, because if so, that would be awesome for me.

S4 engines and flywheels top out at 7000 RPM.

And you really don't want to use a stock flywheel at much more than that.

Yes that does mean that your car is an S5

86-88 = S4
89-91 = S5

why is that?

but what about an S4 with an RB aluminum flywheel, or does it not make a difference on the weight of the flywheel?

actually, the new auto rx8s still only redline at 7500 (compared to 9000 for the manual) because autos cant handle the higher rpms

you also lose quite a bit of horsepower in an auto rx-8 though.
