swap or rebuild then swap?
ok guys i got a s4 t2 motor n tranny. the status of the motor is unknown. i gotta decide on whether to drop it in and try to get it running or rebuild it and know i have a rock solid motor. or if anyone has tips on how to find out its a good motor let me know.

When I got my Motor, I just jumped the starter with a battery and screw driver to compression test it before even taking it off of the pallet. That will let you know what kind of compression the engine has before installing it and having to pull it out again.

Take off the exhaust manifold and check how the apex seals feel, see if they have plenty of spring left in them on each side. Spray them with pb blaster or some other penetrating oil as well.
Then make surethe oil cooler lines are looped, or at least block oil from coming out of them, also make sure youre out of coolant or that may come out as well.
Then take out one of the leading spark plugs and slowly turno the engine over.
If the seals have good spring in them and you get 3 consistant chugs, you will be able to install the engine just fine as long as you don't have a bad coolant seal or oil seal.
Although, your best bet would to be to order and o-ring and gasket kit and tear the engine down and check all of the hard seals, for a T2 engine it will be close to $300, however, if you also get vacuum lines, fuel lines, injector orings and grommets...
A)you'll know how long the engine will last
B)You'll be able to remove carbon buildup
C)You'llhave a rock steady idle
D)No worries of fuel leaks if the PD is stil good
E)No oil leaks!
So that's what i'd reccomend
Also, you could probably turn it over with an electric drill if its powerful enough, or an impact wrench or air ratchet.

If you are unsure about the motor soundness and reliability, I'd say rebuild it. Hell you have the chance to port it while it's apart. Besides why take the chance and mod what may be a weak motor, have it blow, and have to pull it out again anyway. I vote for rebuilding just to make sure things are standard.

+1 on the rebuild, i am now in the situation where i didn't want to be 5 months ago, i have to pull the motor out and rebuild it cuz i just decided to go with it as it was, now ive got a butt load of things that need attention and the engine has to come out this weekend. so dont take that chance and go for the rebuild!!!

alright sweet!, sounds like im rebuilding. it was supposedly streetported already. and has all the stock injectors. so its a good possibility it was blown.
rebuild with a bigger street port if possible and bigger injectors.
