Alternative to ATF trick?
With the engine out of the car, I'm looking for a cheap way to restore some compression. Compression was at 95-100 on both rotors, with the rear one having one apex seal that didn't look so hot. (one big bump, two smaller ones). Car runs great, plenty of power, but as far as I know, it's got 60k on it, it's 21 years old, and it's never been rebuilt.
I was considering the ATF trick, but the last thing I wanna do is eat up a coolant seal...this engine is NOT on it's last legs...but I got to thinking...all the ATF does is dissolve the carbon and free the seals, right?
Why not spray a can of carb cleaner in through the spark plug wells, rotate it by hand, lather rinse and repeat? Spraying down the seals with carb cleaner or PB blaster or something should dissolve the carbon there...?
If it wouldn't work, I'd guess it's cause the carbon is cooked on, and a thin liquid like PB blaster isn't going to cut it....that it needs the overnight soak to work.

Remember, the rotary is almost like a two cycle. Oil is injected with the fuel. Any additive that dilutes that mixture can cause further damage. Many owners put Marvel Mystery Oil in their gas tank at every fill; usually about 4 oz. This is to give a little more lubrication to the seals.

this works wonders. I take no responsibility if it breaks your engine. make sure you run it w/o a cat installed. (if you chose so)

Clean.

Premix and prevent carbon buildup . J/k, I wouldn't even do that myself, though others do. I'd clean it up as much as you can w/o harming anything then use prevention methods to very slowly reduce buildup while the engine is put together. Prevention: rev high from time to time, www.toptiergas.com (Chevron, 76, Shell, Texaco), motor oil w/ good detergents(Castrol GTX, AMS, etc.), possibly Rotary Aviation OMP adaptor to run premix w/o the hassle.
