Strange Oil pressure problem...

Strange problem here, during initial startup I get oil pressure but about 30 seconds later I lose oil pressure until the engine warms up. after that oil pressure remains at it's normal levels.

I seem to get oil circulation (oil cooler gets hot) and havent seen any adverse effects so far. But that doesn't mean I'm not concered for the engine. Has anyone seen these symptoms before? Oh BTW this is on an engine with just under 100,000 miles that had been sitting out of a vehicle for about 1 year.

I am fixing this problem on my car right now. I had a failure fo teh fron cover oring due to teh fact that mazda supplies S5 gaskets with all rebuild kits now.

Do either of you have the stock themo-pelet(sp) in the front of the E shaft? If so I highly recomend putting in the replacement piece from a shop like Atkins Rotary or Mazdatrix.

i have 30lbs or less of oil pressure when im idling...and it goes up to 50-55 when im going around 60 mph. Could this be the sending unit? Its starting to worry me...the normal oil pressure is what, 60 right?

Totally forgot about that. You need to check your oil pressure sender, and getting a aftermafket gauge/sender (either mechanical or electric) should be used to make sure that the oil pressure readings your are getting now, are in fact correct.

Ok sounds like i'm gonna have to install that thermal pellet that has been sitting on my nightstand for a month now. I think i'll also switch the sender from my old engine to the replacement.

At idle the 15 psi or more is ok.50-60 is fine when its above idle.

Could be the sender...tap on it with a screwdriver to see if the pressure changes...

Could be the thermal pellet, but it's funny it "unsticks" itself after 30 seconds...

Could be the front cover o-ring, but that will usually show pressure losses across the board...All the time...

How's your oil filter? Particularly the check valve/bypass valve function...

so if it was the front cover o-ring then you will have below 30 psi at any rpm? would it to go 50 psi then drop back down or will it just stay below 30 psi?
