I took my car to a mufflershop today and found out that I had 2 universal cats on my car. I took it in for the guy to make me a straight pipe but he told me it would cost $250 cdn!!! Is that a good price? cuz i dont' think so...

Is this all the way from the header or turbo to the back of the car?

no..
He would make it from where the first cat starts to the start of the ypipe. He also has to make flanges for my system because the place that did my y pipe f*kn welded it on instead of using flanges.

Screw that man, just buy one from rx7.com. They have a race pipe for i think 130. It goes from the stock manifold to the stock Y.

If the universal cats were not designed for rotaries they could be clogged. I would go with the bonez race pipe since it is a cheap alternative. Also I dont think a shop can legally remove the cats for you since they would get fined. If you bring it in with no cats then I think they would probably do anything. Depends on the shop I suppose.

130 cdn is around 180 Cdn. Add GST, PST (14.5%), shipping, and duty, and you're looking at... $250. Big savings.

$250 cdn is about right for a 2.25-2.5" race pipe from the stock manifold to the stock-y-pipe, especially since he has to make his own flanges.

Of course, that had better be mandrel bent, and knowing the number of shops in BC with a mandrel bender, I doubt it is.

I CAN'T USE THE RACE PIPE!!!
I said that twice already...
What would be a good price?
considering he has to
1. cut out my 2 cats as a whole
2. weld flanges on where he cuts the cats off
3. put flanges on to the cats so i can bolt the cat back on
4. make a pipe to replace the cats (also with flanges)

Well, I can do that kind of stuff (not mandrel bends). Since I am in school, I don't generally have a lot of time for car work other than my own, but if I got a look at your system, I could tell you what is needed and a decent price for sure.

Well dude I dunno whats its like where you are, so this wont help at all, but I wouldn't pay more than $50 australian for what your asking...

All he has to do is a bit of cutting and weld a flange on....
The actual straight bit of pipe is worth about two poofteenths of fsck all, and I can't imagine there'd be much else to do?

Sounds like a very steep price to me.

Pretty much equivalent to Canadian dollars.

I am haveing trouble imagining how you Hvae no flanges and the stock header. You can't (easily) weld a pipe onto the stock exhaust manifold, so a flange MUST exist there. (orovided you indeed do have the stock exhaust manifold).

So, provided one exists there, you simply unbolt that flange.
You cut somewhere between the Y and the second cat and weld a flange onto each side. Now you can bolt your cats in and out.

To make the race pipe would require some straight piping, and two more flanges. The pipe has basically one bend, although a good shop will add a second slight bend.

Totl cost for parts: $40 for 4 flanges (extremely high figure), maybe $10 in 2.25" piping (canadian dollars).
The cutting would take minutes, the flange welding would take about 20 minutes, and the pipe bending all of 10 minutes. Add in another 10 for test fitting and reassembly, and you have $50 + 40 minutes of shop time at $100/hour, so a total of $116 is what you should pay.

I build these, non-mandrel, for around $90, but since yours is custom, my version would not bolt in.

Satisfied?

Did you even read my post?

If you have the stock exhaust manifold, you have a flange there. You have to. No exhaust shop will attempt to weld pipe onto cast iron.

Since you alread have a flange there, you need 4.
one for the y pipe, one for the back of the cat pipe, and two for the race pipe.

alright
thanks.
now i have to find someone that will do that for $120 bucks
and i don't really care if the bend is mandrel because the pipe will only be used once in a while for a bit of fun..
