Still Need Help, All imput is helpful
I have ownd the car, 89 GTUs for 4 months. I still know nothing about the car, before this i did not even know what a rotary engine was. None of teh following is relatied sorry to put so much in one thread. I need to take off the Air pump, but i dont know where to get the plate to cover the hole. I have this horrable noise and vibration, after 45 MPH or so, that just started. The car will not stay running , idles very hard, but only some times. Any Help??
By the way , i feel like a dumb ***, Whats and FC?
I am not a car morion, just Roatry challaged. Give me a chevy V8 or Pontiac V6 and i will run circle around the compation. But i have fallen in love with my rex and hopfully it will love me back at the track, with alittle TLC.

1st gens have FB, and 3rd gens have FD.

Edit: Before I got too worried about the car, I would do a complete tune up. New plugs, filter, etc...THis may help your car out. If anything, it will eliminate some of the potential problems.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
You say you are removing the airpump... I am assuming this is a temporary thing???
Do you understand that if you remove the air pump your 5th/6th ports will fail to open, robbing you of HP above 3800 RPM, unless other modifications are made?

FIRST- buy or download a Factory Service Manual.
can be downloaded at http://www.fc3s.org
Removing the air pump will disable both the 5th and 6th port actuators and the VDI (Variable Dynamic Intake) valve. All are operated by pressure derived from the air pump.
Some on this forum will tell you to just wire everything open. That's the cheap solution. I don't have any personal experience with wired open ports, but I would expect a negative impact on low RPM performance. It's doubtful Mazda would have gone to the engineering and manufacturing expense if the intake tuning wasn't useful.
For the rough idle, do the tune up items and set the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). There are many threads describing the procedure. Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds to clear codes in the CPU. Take it for a short drive and then check the error codes. This may help point you to any components that are not functioning properly. The codes and troubleshooting are detailed in the Service Manual and at http://www.fc3s.org

Check the factory service manual (see link above) to find out how to check codes... its as easy as grounding a check connector, snaping the ignition to the "on" position, and watching the check engine light blink. In my FSM, the code-checking portion is in the Fuel section (section F1). Good luck.

EDIT: Haynes isn't nearly as useful (in my opinion) as the Factory Service Manual. Take the time to download the PDF (it hink it is) off of the above site.

A computer isn't required to read error codes on 89-91 RX's. If your shop can't figure out how to read them, that's the wrong shop for your RX-7.
Mazdaformance, Mazdatrix, and Racing Beat all sell Factory Manuals. They are expensive, so it would be worth your time to figure out how to download it. The Factory Manual is a MUST HAVE if you are going to do a lot of your own work.
