Stereo System Sucks...

I've got a 90 Vert and am looking for new stereo system ideas. Got a few questions due to some of the unique items already in this vehicle.

1. Can the speakers in the head rests be replaced with new units while still using them as intended?

2. What do most people do about the stock amp? Can it still be used with aftermarket units?

3. What setups are being used out there & what seams to work well without spending a ton o moola?

4. Whats in your vert & what do like/dislike about it?

I'm not looking to get fancy and don't need a booming system. Just something that'll sound decent with the top down.

The stock amps are trash compaired to aftermarket parts, and need to be bypassed or removed to use new speakers.

I like to completely rewire the car's stereo system with some nicer, larger speaker wire, pulling out all the old junk as I go.

Here are the answers to your questions:
1: NO. well...you can, but it's very hard to get the headrests apart while not damaging them.
2: Some people use them, some don't. You can integrate your surround and headrest speaker switches with them though.
3&4: I have Cerwin vegas in front, kenwoods down low in back, and a 8" bazooka tube where the spare tire used to go. Nothing boomy, but sounds good. (for a vert anyway)

cool, thanks. I'll really need to check what part of my system is still good. probably not much, but if'n i can utilize the stock headrest speakers that'd be nice. if not, oh well. i do know the stock radio/cd player is total junk so thats gonna go first.

My stereo in my 88 SE is sick

JVC KD-LX50 deck
Kenwood 11-band eq (in-dash, gotta love double din)
Infinity Reference 5.25" fronts in door
Infinity Kappa 6.5" components in rear, tweeters near seatbelt mounts
Infinity Reference 10" subs (1 in each corner of the hatch)
Infinity Kappa 202a amp, powering subs
Infinity Kappa 102a amp, powering other speakers

Fully re-wired with 14 gauge speaker wire. Nice stuff, oxygen free. Spend a little extra on it and you will be happy later, b/c you won't have to worry about rewiring it again.

Slide the sub gain on the eq up to grab some serious boom and then slide it back down for everyday listening. Sounds great.

Next up, add the 10 disc CD/MP3 changer behind the driver's seat vertical to the storage bins.

If I feel ambitious, I will post some pics (after taking some new ones.)

exactly what i did with my 88 TII... totally rewired everything, removing all traces of old wire... got 5 1/2" speakers in the dash(kind of lol, they mainly sit there securely with a screw or 2), got 6x9's in the fiberglass part for the 2 bins in the back, and got a 10" sub in a custom bandpass box where the spare tire went... heres a pic of the sub

The stock stereo totally sucks.

But what made me laugh about this thread is that I got a new kenwood for my S5. slapped it in and turned it on.

Blew every speaker I had.

Next day I was shopping for speakers.

my setup is focal woofers in the doors, with tweeters mounted between the door handle and the vent, provides a decent soundstage... about 6 ms of delay can do wonders to center the image though

running the focals (165k2's off of a 90x2 ppi amp)... thats enough volume for me, although i plan on adding a sub (maybe 11 inch focal) in the back behind the driver next to the spare tire to fill in the lows a little better

for head units anything works, im running 2 single din units right now, and definately run all of your own wires because the stock wires a thin and old and suck
