Steering column question

Hey so today i was driving and went to park my rx7 and i heard a snap then all of a sudden the steering wheel could freely rotate, so i got it to park and figured it was a knuckle or park of the collumn snapped so popped the hood and everything was fine, turned the wheel and it rotates 360 degrees no problem, so i tried turing the collumn but it dosent turn.

So i moved up the collumn to the inside of the firewall and it still dosent turn so i thought maybe the wheel just maybe came unbolted? So took the center cap off and the main center bolt was loose but deffinatley still attached So i took it off and the 3 little bolts around it and had the steering wheel and adapter off now.

To my surprise the park where the 3 adapter bolts go on the top of the collumn on the spline, had the teeth stripped, Anybody have any idea how this could have happened? And also whats this piece called? the one at the top of the colum,n and has anybody ever replaced this? caus i got no idea how to do it

sorry for the long post also haha

Jesus Christ does nobody proof read what they wrote? ******* FIX YOUR SPELLING AND GRAMMER! **FIXED**

Hey! So today I was driving and went to park my rx7. Then I heard a snap, and all of a sudden the steering wheel could rotate freely. So I got it to park, and wondered if it was a knuckle or part of the steering column that had snapped. So I popped the hood and saw that everything looked fine.I went back in, and I turned the steering wheel and it rotates 360 degrees with no feedback. Then I tried turning the column but it doesn't turn.

I then looked under the dash and inspected the column till it met the firewall and it still doesn't turn by hand. So I thought, maybe the steering wheel just maybe came unbolted? So I took the center cap off and found that the main center bolt was loose, but it was definitely still attached. So i took off the steering wheel and the 3 little bolts around it. Now I have the steering wheel and adapter off.

To my surprise, the part where the 3 bolts on the steering adapter that is on the top of the column, I saw that the teeth were stripped on the spline. So does anybody have any idea how this could have happened? And also whats this piece called? (The one at the top of the column) Has anybody ever replaced this? because I have no idea how to do it.

Sorry for the long post, and lack of writing skills.

If i got that right, it sounds like your HUB was stripped and not the steering shaft itself, and then i am assuming that your using a cheap ebay HUB for your aftermarket steering wheel if you have one. Which could explain the snap sound you heard, and no steering feedback. If this is the case, then replace the HUB with a higher quality one. Cheaper HUBs have ill results when receiving lots of stress over time on manual steering racks and leads to cracking or stripped splines for some reinforced plastic or low grade aluminum models.
