Starting problems

Ok I have this 87 2nd generation and i'm having some starting problems see the thing is that i got it about 1-3 weeks ago and it hasn't ran yet the guy that had it before said there is this clog in the cat converter we drove it home and we got pulled over because there was some smoke problems and so i took out the exhaust system and I'm going to have the cat replaced with a straight pipe from the manifold to the muffler at the end. So it doesn't run it cranks the engine because of the new starter but nothing happens it doens't even try to turn over if you can help me out or if you have any questions and i could answer them thanks

make sure you get some kind of fuel cut deffencer if you are going to remove the cats. have you already removed the cats and driven on the stock ECU? if you have this could be your problem. i htink we need some more info

umm that is mainly all i can give you ummm lets see does the coolant warning light not let it start because that is on i think the radiator has a leak and after i move in my garage then i will work on it. Does starter fluid work for rotary engines? My brother told me to make sure that the air box sensor or something like that is pluged in because if it isn't it wont start. so I don' t know.

the AFM plug is what hes talking about. no not a a switch to turn the fuel off, a fuel cut DEFFENSER. it protects the system from cutting fuel with the open exhaust.

Mazdatrix.com has them for about 100 bucks. The fuel cut defender wouldnt cause your car NOT to start. It simply protects the motor from cutting the fuel to the rear rotor at about 9 psi boost.

Soo... check all of your options. Spark? Fuel? Air? Make sure you're getting spark at the plugs, so check your plugs/wires too. Fuel: make sure you're getting fuel, and make sure your motor isnt flooded. That would cause it not to start too. Pull the EGI main fuse and crank the motor for 10 seconds to unflood it, then try starting it. Air, make sure you AFM is plugged in like dregg100 said, and make sure all your piping is solid and not leaking. If all of those variable check out, then you can begin diagnosing your problem

Good luck

if you've been cranking it alot then you should probably pull the spark plugs out when you remove that fuse. just pull the leadings(bottom 2) crank it till no more smoke comes out of the plug holes. also, while you have the plugs out make sure they are not fouled out. then you can check for spark at the same time. if its flooded then you know you have fuel. if the AFM isnt plugged in it should start, but it will run like **** for a second, then shut off because it haas no fuel. good luck.

ok so mainly take out the EGI Fuse and where would that be located at? Then check the sparks and how i would do that is by unscrewing a spark plug with the wire attached and see if there is a spark on all of them if there isn't it is probably the ignition coil or the spark plug wire and if that is good then check the fuel it is getting fuel then i know that is good but it could be flooded and I take out the EGI fuse ( where is it located) and if then that then look at my air and see if it is getting air and make sure the AFM is plugged in right.

I don't see where he said he had a TII so why is everybody telling him to get a FCD...

The EGI fuse is located in the engine bay fuse box. That fuse box is located right next to the drivers side (US spec) shock tower. It's a rectangular box with, hopefully, a lid.

Taken from the FAQ:

i took it as he had a Tii when he said his bro had one. do you have a Tii or NA? either way all the stuff we said to do above applies to both cars, so it doesnt matter.

You don't need a FCD for an N/A.
