Starting the mod process.

Ok.

I have a pretty much stock FC right now and am looking to make a fast FI out of it. Don't get me wrong, the engine puts me back in my seat for the first three gears. Nice pull, gotta love the rotary.

Anyway, I am going to park it this winter and drive a 90 Grand Prix that I used to own for three years previous to the glorious RX days. I am looking at upgrading the intake, exhaust, and any other components that can increase performance without causing me to tear directly into the engine itself.

Plans thusfar:

Port and polish the manifold
Upgrade injectors (prolly to 550cc TII)
New intake
Upgrade the exhaust (maybe whole system, or just header and mufflers)
ECU ? (not sure on the effectiveness on an N/A)

What else you got?

I also plan on putting a new body kit and a new coat of paint on my baby this spring along with some other TLC to the interior in the form of a good bath to clean the carpet and seats.

Can't wait till March.

Nobody has any suggestions?

Someone has got to have some suggestions as to what brands I should go with on these upgrades.

Also, I am looking at suspension as well. Any suggestions on that will also be appreciated.

16-MZTX-0010 at http://www.mazdatrix.com/r-ex86nt.htm also spend the five bucks or so for their catalog which is more than just parts but advice on the different systems on the car from engine to suspension. That 16-MZTX-0010 should be the primary thing you buy for your car. The most effective.

HAILERS...That seems like a really nice exhaust. How much is it?
And how loud is it? Thanks

Here's the price list for 16-MZTX-0010 and I like the sound but admit that on long drives to the coast I use foam ear plugs, but then again even with the stk exaust I use foam ear plugs on long trips. Noise of even a stk car of any sort on a long drive will make you tired to some degree. Foam ear plugs make a decided difference. Same thing applies to airplanes. There's a reason the airlines give out foam ear plugs.

That exhaust is what I am looking to get as it is. I want some supreme increases with each piece.

I understand that the little things don't always do a lot, but I want the most I can get (within sensible reason anyway) with each upgrade.

A 28% increase in rear wheel horse power sounds like a winner to me.

How about a good recommendation on an intake setup and ECU to help this exhaust optimize my system. No sense on choking the motor once the exhaust restrictions are lifted

Well you can try to do what I am doing and make your own true-dual exhaust setup like the one that Mazdatrix has for sale. I am going to use the same modified header, some Apexi mufflers & no presilencers and spend prolly spend $700-800 total. i can add presilencers later f I need to. Intake, the best all around filter seems to be the Apexi from the tests done in the performance section. You should prolly just buy the adaptor plate the bolts on the MAF sensor & get whatever filter you like. I got a K&N style one from my local race shop for $35. Think the adaptor is about $20 or so, not really sure. ECU? i am not getting one but was looking at the one from mdrace.com. Some people say it doesn't do what they claim but I guess that comes with people who expect the world from each mod too.

Well.

I read about the ECU from them and would love to see one do what they are claiming it to do. Any increase in fuel economy is great in my book. That is the only thing I miss from my Grand Prix, it got roughly 26-28 mpg on highway. My RX only gets 20-22 on a good day. But it gets up to highway speed a hell alot faster than the ol G.P. did.

I think your idea about the exhaust is a good one. Get a good header, some high quality pipe for a mid-pipe and some awesome hi-flow mufflers.

Any reason for the Apexi mufflers? I still need to do more research on individual components. That is why I am asking the people on here what they recommend because I would rather hear first-hand experience with what is good and bad about a product rather than waste the money on it and find out it is junk.
