Is this the Starter Relay???
Is this the Starter Relay???
I'm having problems starting my 87 tii. I turn the key and all i get is a click. The explanation i got from some of the guys at teamfc3s.org is that the click is the sound the the solenoid makes when it doesn't quite recieve 12v. So i bought a new battery and a starter with a new solenoid (i though it was the starter at first). So some guys mentioned the relay could be the problem.
Any oppinions?
if it is, is THIS the relay?
Thanks

The relay only needs about 100miliamps at 4-12 volts to activate... The solenoid needs around 10 amps at 12 volts, and the starter itself needs anywhere from 50-600amps at 12volts.
If you hear a loud click, its the solenoid, not just the small relay.
Relay clicks, activates the solenoid (clicks), then the starter motor could technicaly click again too.
The saying is you need about 10 volts to start a rotary. Anything below, and the starter itself won't have enough juice to make it over the compression.

So.. is it fixed?

Are you guys talking about the main relay??? That has nothing to do with the starter solenoid, unless the T2's are wired differently than the NA's (but has everything to do with the ignition system, injectors, ECU, etc...)

On the factory-equipped alarm cars, there's a starter cut relay forward of the main relay, but if it was bad, you'd never even get the "click" from the starter solenoid...And since that relay's contacts are normally closed, even if it's "dead", the circuit should still be there for the starter...
Odd...
Today I went to start my car - it wouldn't turn over. So I got out and took the my booster box to the battery, and there was a clicking sound coming in front of the passanger wheel well. It was coming from an aluminum box. I put the booster box to the battery and the clicking went away. Is that the starter relay?

yea where the **** is the damn solonoid or relay, I have the same damn problem. I was thinking of just wiring a push button start directly to the starter (with a fuse of course). This a good idea?
ONLY cars with Theft Protection had the Starter Cut Relay. The cars without Theft Protection have a blue connector in its place with a single jumper wire installed in it. It is located within four inches of the Main Relay.
If you hear a click, click ....determine if its the starter solenoid. It most likely is. You might also check the cleanliness of the wire on the solenoid and the cleanliness of your battery posts.

well, when i bought the new starter, it came with a new solenoid. Its less likely to have the solenoid be my problem as opposed to the relay. Where is the main relay, btw?
is the picture i posted the "starter relay"?
Thanks
