stalling and backfiring?

ok guys,
heres the deal, I just finished getting a new engine in my 86 gxl..Everything has been working smoothly for the last two weeks at least, no problems until last night. I start the car,let it warm up for a few minutes, take off, etc. In the middle of my drive, I go to take an easy shift, and the car stalls. Now, at this point, every time I am not on the gas,it immediately stalls..Also, there is backfiring and stuff if I just keep on the gas...its running very odd. This morning I trytojust start it up, and it will rev up to 3k (with the shifter in gear) and then go right back to stalling. If I try to regulate it, it will fluctuate between 2k and 3k, and sound like **** while doing it. What could cause this? I checked for unhooked vacuum lines, and found one going from the tb to a metal hose sticking up, but connecting that didnt help anything...It seems as though it is some sort of electrical issue, but I've got no idea..also, the faq didnt mention much about this...
Thanks for the help..
also, I am assuming that my timing is set correctly, as the lock bolt isnt loose, and I dont think it moved on its own..

bump

well, like I said, the timing was definitely correct before this problem, and I don't believe it could have changed on it's own..I can fool with that tomorrow, but is there some way it could have changed internally? Is there a timing chain that could have jumped a tooth or something? I also checked all my engine fuses in the engine bay, and none were jumped..I can't figure out what would cause such a spontaneous change in the way it was running...any help would be great..thanks guys.

See if the ECU is throwing any codes, TPS could be bad. Good news it sounds like an electriclal problme rather than engine internal.

Here is what you need to check your afm. On my site Project Rotary,

click on forum (left had side)>1988-1991 rotaries, Everything else>Service manuals 1986-88. On this page you will see the link for either 1986-1988 or 1989-1991. Choose which everone is for your car. The chapter you need is the "Fuel and Emission chaptr" there you will find how to test your AFM
