smoking... !

i just got the RX7 and i did searches, none of the cases really fit mine. so here goes. got the car non-running, after some good-ol-fashion stare at engine bay i decided to pull plugs, of course there where no leading plugs all 4 trailing, so i replaced them and the engine started right up... and it filled whole garage with smoke for like 5 mins then ran normal so after it got to temp i shut off the car (im restoring it so after it ran its still not drivable). so i was under the car when it was smoking and noticed smoke is pouring out of Cat's and the are getting red hot...(i need those replaced) so like 2 days later i was checking someother things and a friend came over and wanted to help with restoration he wanted to hear it so i started it up and it was fine... then like 4 days later my mother wanted the car moved to back portion of garage, so as i moved it smoke started bellowing out of it and when i brought it back into garage it filled the whole inside so i killed engine and got out, but it kinda smelt like a burnt smell MAYBE CAT? i haven't started it back up for fear of something really wrong... is this car shot?
-also i checked coolant and it wasn't going down, nor did it smell like gas
-the oil seems to smell a little like gas could that be it?

[clifnote] got car running, it was fine after initial smoke...3 starts later it smoked terribly, not coolant... could bad cats cause somke?

sry for noobness

personally i think your cats are plugged, ofcourse it would smoke if they were, take the exhaust off before the cats and see how the car starts and runs, smoke and all, but if you replace your cats your car should run fine, the reason they are getting red-hot is because they are most likely plugged....

does exhaust fumes come out of your tail-pipes?, and is it normal or barely any...?

it does come out of tail pipes, but as rolling bellows and not right away, generally it rolls out of exhaust, along with out of the side of cats

^^I'm not so sure. One thing could be just that your oil injectors may be squirting too much oil in and causing it to smoke. little starts without letting all the oil burn out has caused some build up of oil in the chambers. You being worried about the cat getting hot could be a contributing factor.

You could have a coolant leak. The smoke will be whitish in color and does not have to smell like coolant. Depending on where the Rotor is sitting it may/may not seap into the chamber. Your motor will run fine until it starts to see operating temps and then the white cloud for about 3-5 minutes.

Take the Cat loose so the exhaust can flow freely and see what you have. It will be loud so do it at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Better yet do it during the week while everybody is at work.

the bolts are being a pain, and i need a new fitting for the compressor, or my friend return my cutting disk. so anyways i took off the heat shielding and there was a gash down the middle of the last cat, i started the car and let it smoke for a while but i noticed all the smoke was originating from that cat, anyways i tapped the hole with a hammer and it kinda broke open, spewing even more smoke. so i turned car off and there was an ice cold liquid running out of the hole and it smelt like the exhaust (burnt) so im figuring thats my problem, and ill just order a presilencer to replace all 3 cats.
