Another Engine rebuild thread

Alright everyone, the time has come for a rebuild on my 87 Turbo II. I am very excited and anxious to get it started and finished. Most of you watched my thread about my car getting painted. Now it's time to watch the engine rebuild thread. Starting Monday, July 14th my car will be garaged and gutted even though it's not running right now.

Here's a video of the 2nd to last time my car started, as you can see it was smoking... thought it was flooding but, now i'm not even sure. I'm pretty positive that the water seals have finally given in. The motor has 142k on it. So regardless it needs a rebuild.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=VZQk_pVFF4s
Dont mind me choking on the smoke.

If you hear anything out of the ordinary on the video let me know.

Secondly, I have my rebuild kit in, and now i'm just waiting on one block off plate and then i'll be ready to go. I have to find a way to start the car one last time to get it into the garage or it's gonna have to be towed.

Here are some pictures so you dont get bored yet:

Here a very old engine bay shot... nothing has really changed from then to now but, just so you'll see the general before and after:

And one recent shot of the car:

the turbo is fine. I've already inspected that. The car was using alot of coolant/water. 2 weeks after filling it, it was already way below the lowest notch on the overflow tank. Once i get it started it runs fine aside from the 3k hesitation. When i started it the time before that, it smelt like it was burning water. It was EXTREMELY hard to start. It came in a process of a month, i started running premix and that seemed to help for a little while. Then in the past two weeks it got progressively worse where i would have to push start it SOMETIMES, and other times just pull the fuse like it was flooding. Then this past week, it was to where i had to push start it ALL THE TIME or i would wear down my battery trying to do the deflooding by the fuse and cranking. On monday my boyfriend put some ATF in to see if that wouldnt help maybe eat some carbon up, left it over night, and the next morning... nothing. Just alot of smoke pouring out of the exhaust and my battery is dead.

I can get a jump and take a video of whats going on now if you'd like, but no promises on me getting it started. It just doesnt seem like it's going to happen.

I really cant tell from that angle, seems to me like oil control o rings can be a little worn, or maybe your turbo is burning a bit of oil.

What i would do is get a compression test first before hand so you know exactly whats going on. Because let say after you have built your new motor and strap everything on and you have the same issues you will be pissed.

On the other note good luck on your build and keep the pics up, its a shame that a woman has a full rebuild kit already lined up and her car is still running, when 50% of the guys here dont have enough to fix a leaky oil cooler line.

Mad props and DONT KEEP IT STOCK ----STREETPORT FTMFW!!!!

A little advice on the build, try and get starter, slave cylinder, fan clutch, ...etc
I said to my self "ahh it will hold up and when ever they break i will replace it" now i am swallowing those word everytime something goes wrong in my car. Take an extra 300 bucks and buy everthing new with warranty you will thank me .

Hey thanks alot for the advice. I've had that rebuild kit ready for about 2 months now... i jsut knew the time was coming and i wanted to be prepared incase i didnt have the money now to buy one. I honestly dont think it's the turbo at all but, i'll check it out one more time just to be on the safe side. I definatly need a new fan clutch, mine squeels at 3k or when i get around 3k, it's SOOOOOOO annoying. I just havent started looking for a new one yet. Anyone have one???? lol.

I'm getting new motor mounts and i'm cleaning up the rats nest... and painting my engine bay black to hide dirt and oil. (yes i know the rest of the car is white). I'm getting rid of my nasty camber as well.

OH, and DUN DUN DUN...... I know you guys are probably wanting to know if i'm getting it ported.... the answer is HELL YES. It gonna have a small/medium streetport since i dont have a better turbo yet, or a power fc. I was also think about running a hybrid s5 turbo.... what do you guys think? Just for the time being until i can get something better.

My due date is getting close! Anyone have any idea on what i might be able to do to get the car started aside from the typical fuse and spark plug pull? Dont say ATF because i've already done it and it still wont start. I really wanna back it into the garage and i dont wanna have to push it... (it's on a slight hill).

Ok so i have some good news.
I went outside and charged my car battery and then tried starting it after 3 days of it sitting with ATF in there....

After about 6 tries of cranking it, it started.... i made my step dad take a video...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6F-GEvg9uI

and in the second video i took of just the general way the engine sounds, just so you guys can hear it better. Tell me what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU2nwNd8UuA

I drove it around my neighborhood for a few minutes and burned out all the ATF... and it ran fine and sounds fine.... How weird.

Alright kiddos, DAY ONE:

Sorry if the pictures are huge, i dont feel like resizing them. Deal.

Anyway, everything went really smoothly, except we couldnt get the downpipe off. No damage to the motor at all. Everything looks great. The porting starts tomorrow.

The boyfriend

Some crusty wiring... gross..
