Unhappy smoke from shifter

Ok today I got my rx-7 back from a guy who specializes in building speaker boxes. I got it back and was amazed at how awsome the setup looked. (Ill send pics later) any way I was waiting for a friend to stop at a gas station except he passed the gas station so I had to fly like hell to cach up with him and flag him down. When we finaly stopped I noticed there was smoke coming from inside the boot. It wasn't thick puffy smoke, it was barely noticable, I would have thought it was dust if it hadn't been for the way the sun was shining. Anyway can any of you tell me why it was smoking like that. Also I hadn't been driving it for the past two weeks so its been sitting for a while. Cojuld that have something to do with it

the rubber boot around your shift lever is most likely torn or broken. its a common thing on FCs. go junkyard hunting to see if you can find a decent one.

re:

well the thing is I just had the bushings and all the parts in that area replaced including the rubber boot. Could it be a misinstallation or what.

Pull it off and look. It takes like 10 seconds to take it off.

yeah, pull it all back off and look around. somehow, the smoke is getting past that boot. the bigger question in my head is whats causing the smoke in the first place?

i was wondering something on a side note, should the transmission be filled all the way to the top with transmission fluid or should it be half way. Unfortunatly Im no wheres near the car, Im at ciollege right now so all i can do is take it to the guy that worked on my transmission before but i just wanted to give him an idea of what it might be.

If you are concerned about loss of Tranny fluid than I would top It up through where the shifter Is. Ofcourse you would have to remove It first. Also where would you get the Idea of filling up the fluid half way? Better yet I don't want to know. Fill It up all the way 'till It comes dripping out.

Don't fill it up all the way. It's not necessary. The fluid in the top of the trans is just there to lube the linkage. Just make sure the linkage is not dry and you're good to go.

If you fill it up all the way, the gear oil gets all over the rubber boots and rots them away.

In my 1st gen, I drained it all out and replaced it w/ synthetic grease. Seems to work just as well except no mess.
