Should I get this Turbo Timer?

Well. I'm nearing the end of my TII conversion and am thinking of getting a Apexi Turbo timer with the harness.

I understand that our turbo's are also water cooled helping prevent coking but would I benefit from it at all?

Also another plus for me getting it is that it's got a built in A/F guage and a volt meter.

Since I'm not sure what my A/F is going to be I was hoping the guage will at least clue me in on how bad I am.

It's a S5 external engine with S4 rotors with a RB DP and PS with Corksport Single. I'll also get the injectors cleaned and flowed and I'l have a Walbro.

Does the SAFC have a A/F guage???

I might get an SAFC 2 to help with the open atmosphere BOV and minor tuning(using stock 550's) if I dyno it.

Get whichever turbotimer you want.. most have voltage readings anyway.

O2 reading is next to worthless, but unlike everyone else, I always invest in a turbo timer, cuz I'm not patient enough to sit around waiting for the car to cool, especially after pulling into the pits after a few hotlaps.

No you will not benefit from having a turbo timer, any AF ratio guage you get short of a wideband one is going to be next to useless aswell.

But if you want one in your car then that is your decision.

Yes well you might be able to use it to tell when/if your car is going into 'cruise' mode..

But appart from that I can't see any other real reason you might want a narrow band O2 sensor display.

I know any A/F guage other than a wideband is a guestimate. Well that's better than trying to listen for pings!

I don't want to buy a dedicated af guage because it's useless to do so but if it is built into a uselful item like a SAFC or TT then it's worth it.

Oh yeah,
The Apex is around 115 after harnes on the internet.
And in the local Rice store(Versus Racing) I can get a SAFC II for $290 plus tax(around $310 after).

No not really, do not use it as a tool to look for detonation.
By the time the guage reads anything leaner than Rich, you most probably would've already detonated.

They're too slow and inacurate to use to avoid detonation.

But if you like looking at it if it comes bundled with some other electronic gizmo then fine, just please don't try and use it as a tunning aid.

Its not accurate, granted. But it can be a helpful guide to prevent any pinging. Mine has reacted quickly enough for me to get off the gas before things went bad.

I'm really suprised about that, every AFR guage i've seen has reacted way to slow to avoid anything, let alone a ping from running lean!

For the guage to actually read lean it would have to be higher than 14.7:1 (is that right?) more like 15:1, and if your booting it at that a/f ratio you'd be very lucky not to ping..

Thats just my very limited understanding of it all anyway.

Bleh too late. I just bought a Koyo radiator from Rx7store and I'm not getting the TT because of extra shipping.

I'll probably get the SAFC II since it's a good deal and I want to get on a dyno to set my a/f.
I won't be able to tune that much with 550's still but I'll be ready for 720's later on(depending on what the dyno and wideband say).

I dont swear by it, but yes, I was under boost. I dont think you can tune by NB 02 sensors, but they CAN give you a general sense of your cars behavoir. Just like a ghetto compression test can give you a GENERAL sense of the motors condition. Nothing takes the place of a good old tuning session on a wideband though...
