short in seat belt light

Issues present on a 91 Convertible. How can you identify and fix a problem with the wire beside the seat for the seat belt light? In addition to the light blinking it seems to cause the high beams to go out too.

Can you be more specific regarding seat belt light, wiring.
High beams going out is more likely a problem in the headlight/dimmer switch. Seatbelt light circuit and head light circuits are independent of each other. I think this is more a coincidence that both things are occurring.

Over time, the contacts in headlight and dimmer switches get dirty and sometimes a little corroded.
The combo switch(headlight and dimmer) can be removed from steering column and with care disassembled and contacts cleaned and lubricated and work like new when put back together and reinstalled.

Do you have an SA or FB and what year is your car?
Have any pics of it?

it ia a 91 RX-7 convertible - did not pass inspection because bright lights would not stay on unless you held the lever. seat belt light continually flashes and beeps ( until you buckle up). holding bright light lever, brights flash in unison with seat belt light. because the security light stays on, i disconnect the battery. what is really weird, frequently when I connect battery and and turn key on, everything works perfectly. as soon as I turn key off and back on, I have the same problem. Do you know what could cause such an erratic problem?

Disregard my response to you in my 1st post, the symptoms and fixes i referred to are specific to 1st gen cars.
1st thing that comes to mind on your vert would be ground issues causing feedback in multiple circuits. Does this car have any accident history, prior wiring repairs, component replacement? Has the dash been disassembled at some time prior to this issue? How long have you owned the car?Besides mentioned issues, does anything else in car not work
Do you have access to FSM,doing your own work?At some point someone is going to post and tell you that you need to post this in 2nd gen forum. There are sections for 1st,2nd,3rd gen RX7s.I'll help you as much as i can here.

So does the seat belt light remain illuminated even after the light check is completed in the warning light surround?

Couple things, check all grounds and battery are clear from corrosion. possible the headlight switch is getting cranky, long term issue with FC's. Check the headlights themselves, make sure they are not split, clear of corrosion on the connections etc.

2nd, switch the car over to antique plates. Don't have to do emissions and safety inspections, plus it's a one time fee. Possible to save money on insurance once you have those plates. Downside is need at least one other car with valid plates to be able to do it.

Since problem is random with turning ignition on & off, I suspect a ground or bad switch. I will check all grounds. Could the ignition switch cause this problem.

Great Idea with antique plates. i will check it out. Thanks

Hey bud,

one thing for you to check is the security computer in the car. Drivers side kick panel. The electrolytic capacitors in mine had failed and it was causing the security system to do weird stuff, like blink the seatbelt light randomly. There is a thread on it here
