shifting

general question, i have an 88 with a 5 speed, and the 1-2 shift is not a straight pull back, u have to go back the middle and then diagonally into second gear... is that how it is supposed to be?

No, somethings wrong. It should go straight back. There is usually a little "notchiness" on the 1-2 shift on most older rx-7s, maybe some grinding when shifting fast.

Yeah, that happens to me when I race someone. I shift quickly to 2nd, and the stupid shifter gets stuck and makes a grinding noise. Damns

Try installing new shifter bushings and see if that helps. They're cheap, and easy to install.
