Shifter gets hot?

Hi, I recently bought an RX-7, which is equipped by an aftermarket shifter. I think its a shortshifter, but the receipt for it wasn't included in the stack of maintenence records tat came with it.

Anyways, it gets warm, especially at the base. If driven hard, it actually gets rather hot.

But it get especially warm after being allowed to sit after a drive. To the point where I keep a towel over it to protect my hand.

Usually its not a problem, but I find it troubling. Should I worry about it? Is it normal?

The car has a bit of exhaust leak, would it be plausible to say that the exhaust is blowing out and somehow heating up the tranny? maybe?

Thanks for any input,
Alex

Haeat rising from the tranny and exhaust. Travels right up the shifter, you can sometimes feel the heat around the center console area depending how much insulation is missing. Check your shitfter boots and insulation around there for excess heat coming in. Otherwise not much you can do for the heat transfer from the tranny/exhaust the warms up everything except put another **** on it.

So it's not in any way damaging to the car? If not, I'll keep it in mind, and get it fixed in due time.

How hard of a job is it to DIY?

Thanks.

Nah, the shifter in my 'vert gets hot, plus the heat coming through the console area helps keep the interior warm when I drive with the top down in the winter...

It's easy, mazdatrix has the parts and a write up on it.

Thanks. I have another question. Occasionally, when I try to start, the starter doesn't crank and the speakers "pop". Try it again, and it goes.

Doesn't seem like a big deal, right?

Dunno, bad wires, dirty connections.... as in grounds and hot wires for battery and engine or somewhere else in the chain? Could it be the starter or the little switchy thingy on the clutch not working right? Bad ignition switch? Does everything else work just the car won't turn over?

Yeah, everything else works perfectly, but the starter doesn't do anything.
