shift **** replacement.

hey everyone. i recently got my 89 rx7 and im slowly starting to mod it. today i wanted to replace the shift **** but i couldnt figure out how. i tried loosening it by turning but i didnt want to break anything so i stopped. if anyone could help me out i would really appritiate it. thanx.

Pretty sure all the stock ones are screw on. I went through three after market ones before I found one that didnt make the shifter any taller and fit well.

You've got to loosen the little jam nut on the bottom of the **** first, then it should unscrew easily...

I guess there's a little nut under the **** the threads opposite. You have to unscrew it by using the normal screw in method (clockwise), and unscrew the handle like normal. Sorry if that's confusing. If there's no nut, just try harder.

it's an S5, you only need to unscrew it

There is no Jamb nut or lock nut on S5 shifters.

The **** just screws on (or off).

I tried to take mine off today... No nut but wouldn't screw off worth a damn... i give up... just gonna put in a short shifter and put a **** on that

either then it is a S5 shifter (black) or the last owner took the nut off and did not replace it (though I would imagine it too be hard to align the **** without it).

i had to double clamp to get my 88 off, clamp the shift **** and the steel shaft to keep from breaking it and just use a sissor pull(opposite directions) to loosen it. try that

I know what the S5 shifter looks like, and it's defenitely an S4. I guess that may explain why it took so long to get the thing straight last time I took it off. I had a blister on my thumb from cranking on it. I suppose I ought to find one in a junkyard then.

yea my s4 doesnt have a lock nut cause i took it off but now my shift **** isnt strait and i lost the lock nut for it. and has anyone found out if the miata short shifter works in the fc's yet (not meaning to hijack) if ya want a good short shifter mazdatrix.com has a good one. if the miata short shifter doesnt work then im going with the one from mazdatrix
