shift knob?

shift ****?

I would have searched to get this question answered but every time I try It tells me proxy error. So im apologising in advance for this basic of a question.
Im going to replace the shifter bushings in my car. And ive read the write up on mazdatrix. But being the genious I am I cant figure out how to remove the shift ****

Could someone please tell me this really fast?

unless it's s4. then there's a locknut at the base of the ****. but yes, s5 just takes a little muscle.

s4 = 1986-88
s5 = 1989-91

its an s4....so I just take some pliers to the lock nut on the bottom and twist it left?

umm... not sure. I've never taken one off, myself. if you can see the nut it should be obvious what tool you need to remove it (open-end wrench, pliers, allen wrench, etc.)

Haha...well ill get to twisting then.....worse thing that could happen is breaking it....right?

Turn it left, but as though you were behind the nut, not looking from the top. Confusing enough for ya?!?! Looking from the top, you'd actually turn the nut clockwise and turn the **** counterclockwise.

Maybe, I took off the know a few minutes ago, and it looks like there were two tabs in the shift **** at some point, but maybe they're all like that. There's also the jam nut and that twisted off by hand, so maybe I'm not the first to dink with the ****.
