Question Shakin down the road

Hello all, I have a question that i hope to solve. I have a 1988 SE. When i get on the gas about half throttle or full throttle the car vibrates as the RPMS get higher, when I shift it gets a little better but i guess that's because the RPMS are lowered. So I guess what I want to know is this normal? Also when i sit at idle and the clutch is not pushed in i hear a whining noise but when I push the clutch in it goes away. I am new to this kind of car so please help in any way. Thanks, Pete

It's def. not normal.

It could either be transmission mounts or a driveshaft. I had a very similar problem recently and I assumed it was transmission mounts. It turned out to be the front u-joint on the driveshaft. The bad news is the u-joints are not replaceable so you will need a whole shaft. I would say go to the junkyard check the classifieds here.

If you want my transmission mounts, I could save you a bunch of shipping over ordering directly from mazdatrix. I got mine from there and the shipping from the midwest was hefty. Mine never left the box.

If you search "ujoints" you will find that they are replacable with a little effort. The replacements go for about $50. As far as the whining, sounds like throw out bearing or pilot bearing.

I had the drive shaft problem on a 1986 5.0 mustang that i used to own, I'll check it today. Can I get an upgraded driveshaft from somewhere?.............One more thing when i put the car in forward or reverse i get a clunking noise like something is hitting the bottom of the car. I looked underneath the car and it looks like there is a suspension part that is out of whack or missing a rubber bumper or something. Does any one have an idea on what that is?????

Pics of what? The vibration is there weather your driving or just sitting there. All i have to do to make it vibrate is push the gas and bring the RPM"s past 3000. I guess it could be the transmission mounts or engine mounts

Whining noise? One of the bearings. Throwout, pilot, etc. etc.

Clunking? Probably U-joints. You can take your driveshaft to any good driveline repair place and they should be able to repair it and rebuild it using replaceable u-joints. We do it all the time here at the shop.

i had this problem too recently (2 months ago). i got mine checked out and it was a combination of many things. some things you can check.
-u-joint
-tranny mounts
-motor mounts (didn't need to drive it to feel it. just over 3K rpm and the shaking kicks in).
i didn't suspect my motor mounts to be bad because i installed some banzai poly-type earlier this year. it turned out the bolt that went through the mount snapped and my motor was shaking side to side. i replaced the bolt and its fixed. it never hurts to check. the stock would just be rubber so you can check that easily.

i replaced my tranny mounts with some banzai ones...feels much better now. i will be putting in a new driveshaft (tomorrow probably)..just because i have a spare.

good luck in fixing it. it was scary driving it like that.

Last time I checked, there is this shaft that comes out of the tranny, while the engine is on, whether or not he is moving, this shaft is always in motion ... UNLESS ... he is stopped, in N, AND he pushes the clutch in, then this shaft will slowly come to a rest......but maybe this is not part of the tranny to you.

anyhow, keep us posted Pete!

Well I go to start the damn thing this morning and it won't start. So i suspect the starter is still bad. So now I get the car to turn over and it doesn't want to start????????. So now I think I have a fuel injection problem or no spark. I checked the fuses and all looks good so now I can't even check for the vibration..........anybody want to trade my POS for there good one..............even swap....I won't tell anybody....Shhhhhh
