shifter issues

I've got an 87 rx7 with a very loose shifter. I can put the car in gear and move the shifter like I'm in neutral. Do I need to replace something in with my linkage or just tighten a nut. Is this a common problem?

Replace the shifter bushings, there is no linkage on our trannys. Inspect the large ball on the shifter, if it is galled or scarred, it will need replacement too, or it will eat up the new shifter bushings.

Besides the bushings, the shift lever has a rubber vibration isolator sleeve between the bottom & top half.
That rubber sleeve can give out giving you a loose feel. (BTDT)

There are some cheap but good short throw shift lever kits on e-bay.
A late 90's Miata lever fits.

I just bought a shift kit off of ebay, but it didn't come with another vibration isolator. Should I go to Mazda for that or could someone reccomend where I could get one?

The vibration isolatoer is part of the shifter itself. The shifter is 2 pieces with a molded rubber part inside that holds the upper and lower parts together.

It is for the original one, not for a shift kit. I'm talking about the last boot you put down before you start bolting everything together.
