S5 TII Water Pump Inspection/Replacement

So Im having some cooling issues and recently my FC has been overheating. I'll be purchasing a new radiator shorlty and figured I would also change out the water pump as well.

Need to know what imperfections to look for when replacing a water pump. What are the common defects and sign of excessive wear? I've heard of rust being all too common. Anything else????

Any step by step info on removing the pump would be greatly appreciated. I'll have to remove a pulley and want to know which tools I'll need to prepare for this weekend project

if a water pump fails it is mostly going to leak from the bottm hole as the seal in the bearing went out, it will drip on your front cover. also if its not leaking and ur having problems it could be the blades have been pitted so badly they dont move the coolant any more but thats hardley ever an issue as our cars are old but not that old..

Ok cool....pitting. Will check for that. It's pretty annoying though, my coolant overflow tank keeps well....overflowing. I can hear the coolant ciculating to and from the motor when the engine is turned off...it's this kind of constant "bubbling" type noise.

The current Radiator has never been flushed and my temp sensor is cracked. What to do??

Boiling coolant & high pressures forcing the radiator cap to open are indicative of a blown coolant seal. Look for bubbles in the coolant with the engine running, but when it's COLD (you know, so you don't spray boiling coolant on yourself).

And if you don't already know, there's no bumping allowed in this forum.

i recently changed my water pump and found the pump housing to block gasket was shot. This obviously meant i had air getting in and there was a whole lot of crap in the housing through bolt holes and some real nasty brown coloured coolant.

I found the following topic real good and it made the job a lot easier. Everything in the write up is good, only thing i would add is that there is a tightening sequence given the Haynes workshop manual.
good luck mate

and thanks to vaughnc for posting the topic - great write up mate!
