s4 turbo teardown

Hi guys, I'm trying to get the wheels out of my s4 turbo, but I just can't seem to get the nut off the front. Anyone have some helpful hints as to taking the stock s4 turbo apart.

yeah not doing it yourself, i wouldnt tear into a turbo even if i was really cocky. but i would send it off to get a turbo inspected or rebuilt, because the tolerances in a turbo are very very precise.

I have to take it apart, I don't need to rebuild it, I have to port the wastegate, and when they shipped my motor, they cut off the downpipe and that sent metal flakes all into my turbo. I wouldn't be tearing it apart if the metal wasn't all up in there, and paying $200 for someone to do it is out of the ?.

so what are you doing? getting another turbo to replace it? and if you aren't worried about the turbo then to stop the nut from moving just jam screwdriver in the wheels.

I want to use the same turbo, it's not messed up, it hasn't been runned since the flakes went in it. I just need to take it apart so I can blow all the metal out and can port my wastegate.

If you want to port the wastegate, just remove the turbine housing. You don't have to disassemble the turbo to do that. If you remove those nuts, you will need to have the turbo rebalanced.

Regarding the metal chips, just hold the turbine/compressor stationary and blow them out with air.

Yes, you can just pull the turbine housing off. You need an open ended wrench to get those two bolts. Put the wrench on securely, and hit with a hammer. They should break loose. At that point, I use the bolts to press against the flanges as I loosen them, which generally starts to push off the turbine housing. If you find it won't budge (be careful not to strip the threads), you will need to hit the housing with a hammer around it's circumfrence. It's an interference fit, so it is VERY tight. Hammer blows should work it loose, but don't crack the housing or concentrate on one spot. At some point, the housing should begin to move. Continue loosening the bolts, while being careful to support the rest of the turbo. You don't want the turbine housing to fall off and nick the turbine blades.

Before you reassemble, clean the turbine housing thoroughly. Clean the mating surface with a wire brush to remove all crap, but don't dig into the housing AT ALL. Clean the mating surface on the center section as well, and blow it clean with air.

Reassembly is a little tricky. You need to be able to rotate the turbine housing to get all the bolts in, then line it up and tighten in a criss-cross pattern.

thanks alot, I"m gonna go try this, and when putting it back together, you think I could put the compressor in the freezer, then put the turbine housing on?

hey, I got the turbine housing loose, but I can't get it past the blades. Is it suppose to just slide right over them?

Edit: I just got the turbine housing off, didn't notice the little plates still holding it on. Thanks for the help you guys, much appreciated.

You shouldn't need to cool the center section to put the turbine housing back on. Actually, if you do, it may go on crooked. It's a pretty close tolerance fit.

Yeah, it's gonna come in real handy tomorrow. I just got done taking off all the emissions and did the TB mod from the RR site. I'll prob have the motor done and together in the next week or so, and throw it in my car finally.
