S1 Gearbox in S4, what do you think?
Hey dudes,
Ive got an 88' N/A at the moment, its having its engine rebuilt soon once they take the engine out and split it. Its guzzling down the oil and fuel abnormally with only about 50% of the power it should have and a hotter engine than usual as well as blowing smoke on start ups, I reckon the seals are worn, il find out soon. Other than that which ive prepared for (money wise), what i wanted to ask was is a series 1 gearbox in a series 4 a potential problem?
As far as I know its got a reconditioned series 1 gearbox in it and I have been warned that if i change from 1st to 2nd at a high rpm (which i like doing) it may actually break the dam gearbox. I also think it will effect performance and power as well. Would it be best to convert to a series 4 gearbox as it should have or just keep this one?
Cheers.

I've got an SA gearbox in my FC. It's a hybrid of sorts though, with an S4 bellhousing and tailshaft. I did some reading on it and I recall some difficulties if using the SA tailshaft, or something like that, I don't remember exactly. The ratios are different (why I bought it), especially 5th which is much shorter for better pulling power when cruising. I bought it 2nd or 3rd hand and have used it for a couple summers, including 5 days on the track and it's fine. I don't abuse it though, and don't have tons of power, so YMMV.
Yer i reckon its fine as long as u dont abuse it but itd be nice to work in the upper rpms in the lower gears in a rotary cuz it really kicks in around the red line ive heard, havent driven mine there as its **** on power at the moment. ive got a racing tailshaft so that helps. I mite actually have a look around for a jap import s4 gearbox, ive found a few for 400 buks so i may save up for that. thanks for dat.

Yes the 1gen trannies are VERY fun to use with an FC due to the very short gears (5th in a 1gen is almost like 4th in an FC), but they do not tolerate much power or abuse. They are even weaker than the (already weak/disposable) FC nonturbo trans.
You have to put on the FC tailshaft so that the crossmember will bolt up. I think the shifter rod may also be an inch or 2 different, but it's been a few years since I compared them.

While some road racers trash an FC NA tranny every other weekend some have it last for years on end. I don't think it's so much that it's "weak" it's more that it wasn't designed to be abused while racing. Don't abuse it (powershifting, forcing it to shift really fast, etc) and it should be fine.

I have a series 4 NA auto and I got a series 5 turbo box. It works awsome
Unless you got the money to have a decent gearbox and keep it maintained dont thrash it, thats what I learned
