new thermostat? Do you have an actual aftermarket temp gague that reads the auction heat level?

Take your old theremostat down to the parts store and find one that looks like it that is 180 degrees. any cooler is too cold for a rotary.

also do you have a schroud around the fan? with out a schroud most fans will not pull enough air through the raditor to properly cool it.

1/4 to 1/2 is normal. As long as it doesn't go above half your fine, so what are you complaining about?

I won't even race my car until the engine has warmed up to at least 1/3 of the way up the temp gague.

Ok, well as a reference, My 88 T2 used to go a hair above half only when I was running the AC on hot days in traffic, but that was before I replaced my precat with a downpipe, and put on a new main cat. It has yet to reach half way up the gague since then, so you may want to look into at least getting rid of your pre-cat(s) if the fan shroud mod does not do it.

How is your air filter, when i still had the stocl air box on, the filter got really dirty, because it was so clogged it was runing hot because it couldnt breath, i put a intake on and its sounds as well as runs alot better.

When is it getting warm? Normal driving, hard driving, sitting idling?
Check the radiator’s not partly blocked by checking to see if the top tank is evenly hot along its length. Unless it’s new, you should probably replace the thermostat as a precautionary measure. Use only a Mazda thermostat, no other.

Might be the water pump. I’ve seen water pump impellers rot away to almost nothing. As the impeller blades get smaller and smaller, the pump moves less water and the car gradually gets hotter. I don’t know any way to test or check a water pump other than pulling it off and inspecting it. www.fc3s.org has a water pump R&R write-up.

Have you removed you air pump? When I removed mine my alternator belt was not enough to turn it over in higher rpms. Mazdatrix has a duel pulley setup for the alternator.
