Running Extremely Rough...

My car is running extremely rough... Its an 89 n/a...

I drove it earlier today and it was driving great... Plenty of power and smooth... I get in it a minute ago to pull it in to the garage and it starts running rough and dies... It would not stay running unless I gave it gas... It was smoking like no ones business... It acted almost like I pulled the plug on the maf... It eventually stayed running on its own but it was still rough... The fpr guage was showing really high fuel pressure (50-60 psi) at idle... I lowered it to about 30 psi... It still ran rough and smoked a lot... I also pulled the air filter cover off and tapped the maf cone inward... The car would almost die but recovered when I released the cone... Please help... I dont want to walk to work tomorrow...

By the way... The smoke smelled like gas...

Any ideas...?

I think it was a lighter color... It is dark out so I could not really tell... It was running very well earlier though... I cant imagine why it would need a reuild all of the sudden... It also has low miles... (about 73k) and was taken very good care of...

Sorry... Accidental double post...

Okay... I am color blind so I got my wife to go look at the smoke... It started fine... I puffed a little smoke then there was none... She said it was grey... It smells like gas... As a matter of fact I have a gas taste in my mouth now... It seemed to run smooth even for a little while... then it went back to running rough... Was not as bad though... This thing does have a freshly installed aftermarket fuel system...

I agree... But would it just start out of no where...? If so... how do I fix it... I know that they will flood to the point of fuel fouling the plugs if there is a lack of compression but this car runs great usually... I dont think it needs a rebuild...

Stuck open injectors? You been filling up at Arco or cheap-o gas stations? Chevron FTW!

Check the resistance of the injectors, the FSM also states how to check for leaks.

Okay... I pulled the entire intake manifold off...
There where some vac lines disconnected near the fire wall at the passenger side of the engine...
I put everything back together and it still ran shitty... It was smoking a lot... I am legally color blind... I dont see black and white but I see color differently... The smoke appeared to be grayish with a very small tint of blue...Would oil be very obvious or just slightly blue?
If the freaking engine has to be rebuilt on this thing with it take as good of care as it has been and only 74000 miles you will find it parted out in the for sale section...

run some good gas thru that thing. also you might give er a tune up. new plugs and wires. fuel filter. the whole bit. also, how do you drive? do you baby it? you gotta wrig it out and let it sing just about every time you drive, it keeps all the garbage out of the engine.

also you might get a compression tester and follow the proceedur for checking compression. 76k? you should have decent compression 100-110psi per rotor face and there souldnt be more than 5 or so psi difference between rotor faces.

ifyou got bad compression, get what they call seafoam and follow the directions on running it through your engine. if that doesnt work well than you may need a new engine.

in that case, ive got a motor ill sell ya out of my 87 na. doing a t2 swap and i need some more cash. the sixth port on the rear rotor is stuck but that is easily fixed and it runs prety good. its a rebuild with unkown miles, id say a little more than your motor does but it runs like a clock!

good luck

I get on it almost all the time... I like to drive about 85 - 100 mph on the highway regularly... I redline every chance I get... I dont know if the previous owner did this... I think he may have babied it...
My next step is the compression check I guess... If I get this thing running right; it is gone...
What where you asking for your motor shipped to 76014? Just in case...

ill take 750,000 cents for the long block. i.e. intake plenums and manifolds, pullies.

ill pretty much disconnect all the wire harness and hosses and pull it from the bay and set it in a crate.

ill see how much it will cost to ship weight that far on monday.

please drop me a pm if you cant getr done, we'll work together on somethin

Just an update... I finally figured it out... My FPR failed and was dumping fuel into my vacuum lines... This was of course flooing the dog crap out of my engine... I am now convined my car will run under water...

I thought I would put in an update incase someone searched in the future for this same problem... Thanks everyone that helped...
