Exclamation Resurrect the ignition coil forums!

Good morning guys, So I have been looking and cant find much on ignition coil upgrades on the FC. If there is anything its back dated to like 2007 which we have come a long way from! For all of us FC owners what is a good ignition coil setup? what are you guys running? and what modifications did it take? new harness? all info will help me and others on our decision on what to use?!?!?!?

AEM smart coils.

Sake Bomb Garage sells em.

Can’t remember wiring details off the top of my head but it’s pretty straight forward.

AEM smart coils are the BEST coils you can run on the FC or any car.

With that being Said, the FC coils are pretty stout. you can swap out the leading coil with two trailing units and run 4 trailing packs, but thats overkill for a NA setup IMHO

I think you overlooked a lot of information, as the IGN1A aka Mercury Marine aka AEM Smart coils in a direct fire setup have been the defacto standard in the rotary for at least the last 5-8 years. If you have the modifications to support serious power and actually need an ignition upgrade, you'll already have an ECU capable of running the coils in direct fire. You'll need to rewire your existing harness or purchase a direct fire compatible harness.

Resurrecting an old thread... but would i need IGN-1A coils if i am looking for ~350 rwhp on my FC (S5 TII)? The old FC3s-Pro website suggests a CDI box... but am wondering if there is a more modern solution.

Planned mods:
- Hybrird BNR Turbo (Stage 3/)
- Fuel pump + 720xcc/1600cc
- Emissions removal
- Koyo Rad + FMIC/VMIC
- 3 in exhaust
- Turbo inlet duct

Thanks!

What ECU? I wouldn’t recommend a CDI box like crane or msd.

I was leaving towards the Haltech PS1000, but am also open to Power FC.

I am still really early in my build, and an considering ECU options. If you have any suggestions, I'm open to them!

No, not unless you're spinning it so high you need to get away from wasted spark on the leading or you're running out of space as far as functionality goes coils would be one of the last bits of of 'tronics under the hood that I'd replace on an FC. Much of ReTed's information was rooted in pretty old tech and the school of piggybacks.

for 350hp the FC coils are fine.

a good upgrade comes from going from Wasted Spark to a Direct fire setup, it doubles the time available to charge the coils.

you probably want to stay away from the MSD boxes, the engines don't seem to like the multi strike, and reliability is questionable

just go with haltech.

heres a tip, program the haltech with the correct settings for the coils BEFORE you wire them the the ECU. you will fry them if you dont.

Why on earth would you go with a twin power on FC coils controlled by a stand alone? The twin power literally only adds dwell by inducing 'ringing' in the signal to the igniters.
