Replacing sub frame on vert?

Is it possible to remove the huge subframe addition on a vert and replace it with the cusco alluminum one that rx7.com sells?

here is a link to it

if so; then this would shave alot of weight off of a vert. I already have front and rear anti-roll bars with adjustable end links, a four point roll bar, and mazdatrix's strut bar with engine and firewall supports; so rigidy shouldn't be compromised.

I don't see why not, the subframe looks like it's just held on with a buncha bolts. Are you sure that aftermarket one will be as solid as the OEM brace?

I'm guessing that the aftermarket one would be a lil weaker, but with all of the other stiffining mods I've made already, loosing the weight might out-due the loss in rigidy.

right now im running w/o the subframe on my vert. mainly because my headers would not clear it.. i have a strut tower bar to compensate... if your is not rusted it is VERY easy to remove.

I just called rx7.com and they said that it would work but not be anywhere near as stiff. The stock subframe bolts to the front section of the frame where as the cusco one only bolts to the mid section sorta.

Defylogik; did you notice any difference when you removed it?

How much would you say it weights roughly?

the cusco one weighs in at 2 pounds.

I think the thing that makes the RX-7 Convertible so superior to other convertibles is that it is so stiff. I remember flying over railroad tracks and the car still felt as tight as a sedan... Going over those same tracks in my buddy's Camaro convertible, I could SEE the windshild shifting left-right-left-right.

Isn't this stiffness what makes it a great handling car?

Will you loose that?
