Removing Rust from brakes.

Another question. I just pulled the brakes off of my FC and I noticed that the rotors were moderately oxidized (car had been sitting for a while.) and I wanted to see what kind of recommendations were out there for removing some of the rust? Does straight brake cleaner work for a situation like this?

Dont worry about it,

The surface rust will come soon after you drive the car, and use the brakes.

Just as long as the surface isn't pitted.

Ultimately I guess I really could just wait until they're put back on. I guess it's more of a pet peeve than anything else.

If you get the rotors resurfaced it fix's them though shortens the life. If you do alot of heavy breaking and the rotors are uneven you'll feel it vibrate alot, some cars do it more than others like audi's must be pretty even or the rear end vibrates alot.

It'll also remove the rust in that area and make them nice n shiny lol, you do gotta pay it's not a easy process its alittle needle going over the rotor and slowly moving scraping off the metal evenly.

+1

Get in your car, right foot gas....30 MPH... left foot brake...rust gone. Unless you have high end rotors, the rust will be back in the morning if it is damp out.

Hes saying push the gas and brake same time at 30mph which will remove some rust but will also wear out the pads.

Resurfacing actually helps, removing the rust is pointless but resurfacing helps... so OP plz dont drive 30mph and push your brakes to remove rust LOL

Resurfacing makes the rotors thinner though, so it does cut into their life. However, if it's just surface rust you shouldn't have to take much off in the first place. Typically it's a serious issue when talking about resurfacing a warped rotor. Warpage usually occurs due to overheating the rotor, so if you make it thinner it will most likely overheat yet again, but probably even faster than before.

if done right isnt resurfacing not that bad? rotors will warp over time... quick resurface run (doesnt have to make it perfect) shouldnt take off too much metal.

I'd only think it'd be bad if you did it alot.

The more a rotor is warped the more you have to take off to get it straight again. Rotors shouldn't warp unless there's something wrong with the material, something wrong with whatever controls the brake pad pressure, you've run your brakes way too hard, or they're too thin.

I parked my Car all Winter..under a Tarp..so when I uncovered it,the Rotors had surface Rust on them..One Run,they are Clean..so Really If you are "****" (that means Picky!),then either Clean them up with a Pad(scotchbrite or That Wheel I was talking about..it's fast and Doesn't take off Metal),or Get NEW ones!(what are rotors,now-a-days?..50 bucks a piece?)..But Personally I would not get them TURNED,as it cuts Surface area off,and make them Thinner..more prone to Warpage,or breakage, and Failure..With Rotors being So Cheap, get new ones,If you decide to.

Yes, just the same way you come over here and mow my lawn for free.

Nothing is free, and the rust is irrelevant.
