HOW are you supposed to install the carbon seal during the rebuild! I have broken 2 now, first i simply tried to hammer in with a socket, second time i tried to push it in by hand with some oil/grease, and both times i shattered the little carbon "seal". I have the rest of the bearings and clips in and ready to go, but this CARBON SEAL, i just cant seem to get it in without shattering it.

HOW DO YOU GUYS DO IT???

I used a socket with a short extension on it

The extension was just to get the actually hammer away from the seal itself.

The Socket can't have any of its interior touching the black carbon seal.

I just tapped mine using care not to get it cocked when going in the bore.

I don't know what else to say about it.

All I use is socket and hammer too. Just make sure it stays square in the bore. Worse case if your eyes arent good enough or your not patient enough to keep from beating the damn thing in not straight, use a press of some sort. Even a drill press would work!

I found out the rebuild kits from http://www.gpopshop.com/services.html were about forty eight bucks and the ones from TurboCity were on the order of one hundred eleven bucks.

I do give TurboCity credit for a very fast response and delivery service though.

This is from a beginner, half *** turbo rebuilder. Only two turbos so far. Two more to go........someday.....maybe. Both rebuilt ones work fine after a couple of weeks running.

Yes, that is exactly what i did.... however it probably was a little crooked in the bore... they are so fragile!

Do me a favor. Look at the TWO seals I took a picture of. One has a thicker outside ring than the other. Which one do you have??? The one with the thinner outer ring I imagine would give me second thoughts on installing it with the socket.

I notice the width of the seals is about the width of a penny. Just a thought. Another thought was finding a piece of pipe that was 3/4" wide. LIke a piece of copper plumbing pipe.

EDIT: THE seal on the right in the jpg above is the one with the thinner outer edge. Seems there'd be not much material for the socket to mate with. I did not install one like that and like I said, would be much more careful installing one of those.

By the way, that place called G=POP..... will probably sell you just the carbon seal by itself. E-Mail 'em.

I have the type shown on the left.... i am going to email them right now and see if i can get just one carbon seal.

Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated. If they will sell the seal alone, i will probably get 2[ just to be safe]

A series four turbo is a HT18-2S.

When ordering one from their site they tell you to buy the Garrett T3 kit number one. This is just FYI in case you didn't know the number of the turbo.
