grrr, rearend noise
my rearend is ever becoming louder, especially on decel. it also is worse when i turn. what is going out and how long do i have. looking to take an 1.5 hr trip, autox, go to work for a week, and the 1.5 hr back home. guesses one whether it will make it, blow up, etc? i'm getting so fed up with this bullshit. i love my car but this is ridiculous. and it always starts failing at the most inconvenient time. i'm tempted to sell it back to the owner after this autox season, which i bought it to autox, and work on paying off my cc's and then getting an fd. that way i'll at least have something falling apart with power instead of something falling apart with no power. oh yeah made a diffuser to work with my airdam. goes back to the large brace and will hopefully smooth out some airflow under the car while its sitting in a praking space with a blown rear. if anyone knows of some cheap rearends in louisville, even better lsd rearend, i would much appreciate the help.

hey jeremy, I got a whole axle minus brakes sitting in my garage...unfortunatly, its not an LSD.
Also, I noticed you registered for SCSP. You should probably change to CSP if you want any competition, nobody around here runs SCSP. I'm sure you'll beat a couple people even on street tires. Plus we need all 3 1st gens grouped together

man i hate to say this but did you check the fluid?
heres the deal,
jack up on the pumpkin as high as it will go "the jack"
check for leaks,if no leaks your good
now get a bottle of rear end fluid and a hose to fit on the end,
make sure it will fit in the top fill plug on the dif,
and just fill it till it pours back out and huury and cap it off,
you want it a little over full
that shoud do it
on the way just check for leaks

Mine was making noises, and I noticed it was kinda leaking. I got under it and discovered that everyone of the bolts around the outside of the pumpkin was loose, like 2 turns loose. I tightened them up, and checked the fluid, very little. So I filled her up (similar to how V8Kilr suggested it) and all was good .

well here's the deal. looks like its leaking out the front were it connects to the driveshaft, down the whole bottom. so i thought i was out of juice. jacked it up, unplugged and stuck my finger in and it still had plenty. since i jacked the passenger side only it allowed me to go ahead and dump a touch more in. so that wasn't the problem. mikep seems to think its the wheel bearings not the dif.

it could be the wheel bearings, but wheel bearings don't make a different noise on decel than accel or coasting. My wheel bearings are shot, but it just sounds like a freight train is driving right next to me all the time, "woahwoahwoahwoahwoahwoahwoah" , but it's the same all the time, just depending on wheel speed.
It could be your tranny to, but that'd give out a nice high pitched whine on accel and decel. My tranny went, and that's what it did.
Only way to tell is to replace/fix the parts in question, starting with the most logical explanation, and then working down.

its the main front bearing,
i blew those out before,
i have blew out a total of 4 rx7 rear ends to date,
so i have seen just about any problem,
just replace the rear end,
its not worth fixing,
unless you think you can,
the haynes will show you the bearings im talking about,
i think a chiltons does not cover it
but i can tell you this
it usally wont blow under normal driving conditions, but it will blow if...
you go over 50mph
drive on freeway and drop into 4 th gear
dump the clutch
im not saying it will do it the first time but it will blow

i'd just need the rearend and parking brake cable. name your price. the apartment i'm getting doesn't allow vehicle storage so i couldn't take the whole car unfortunately. oh yeah, i'll need the driveshaft too since mine's a 79.
edit: let me rephrase. i guess i'll need the whole suspension since it will look a touch funny with those wheels out back and the waffle mania wheels up front. any chance of me coming up on a saturday or something and swapping there? or should i try and bring up my minivan and through it all in the back? i'm starting a new job on monday (finally) so i'm a little strapped for cash right now. it might be a couple weeks before i get some up depending on what you want for it. that 84 looks sweet. you ought to come autox with us this sunday at cardinal stadium in louisville.

oh and when it does blow it wont be as nice as mine,
remember how i could still drive my car?
well your car will only be drivable for less then 100 miles,
the driveshaft will wobble and smack on the underbody while you drive,
it will only last untill you rip all the teeth off your rear gear,
one by one
then the u-joints will break,
ask me how i know
