Was that the rear steering

2 days ago, it was drizzling here in CT. It was a day after I put in new tires and alignment. So there I was, spacing out, on my way to work. I come upon this highway on ramp. At max, i can probably hit 65-70mph. But for some reason i decided to take it at 60mph even when it was a little wet out. So there i was, turning in pretty good, car held and held. All of a sudden i feel the rear of the car start to get light. It feels like it wants to step out. It is not like a sudden snap. It's more like a slide with the rear whels toward the outside. I got the car to go back straight when I lift a little and give it a quick countersteer. Had I just experience the rear steering or did my backend just want to come out?

I would imagine your rear tires lost traction. The pavement can be very slick with just a little water on it. Reason being is the oil an dirt haven't been washed away by lots of rain.

if it was the rear steer, it would had snapped in somewhat suddenly, unless the bushings are seriously gone, but yeah more than likely i agree w/ the others. not the rear steer

Actually... all of your guys might be wrong. If you hit a bump while turning a corner fairly hard..... the rear end feels like it wants to come around fairly violently. The best way I can describe it is like being on ice. My car felt like this. Kinda like the way you described it. Check your differential mounts. Both front and rear mounts for the rear differential. there is one front mount and 2 rear ones. when I say front, I mean in front of the rear end. My front differential mount was busted and I got a new one. that solved my problem right up. You also might get a slight click when you first take off from a dead stop. That is what mine did w/the icey feeling on corners with bumps.

Oh, and check your suspension bolts. I found one working it's way out one time. 14 years is an old car.

good luck.

From what I remember, rear steering is suppose to feel like the car is going to come loose its backend. A lot of 2nd gens were wrecked in its early years is because owners kept giving it opposite lock when the rear steering is there to help them. Thats why I asked if the rear steering was in when it happened....

I raced in the snow autox last year with this year, actually on pure ice. My car was on bald tires, I didnt have enough traction to get the car fast enough to feel the whole suspension of the car...

What I encounter wasnt a 4 wheel drift nor was it a power slide, it was the rear either loosing traction or Mazda showing its technology...

the rear steer won't do anything on a sweeping corner. it only comes into play while hard braking or making sudden movements. how hard where you on the gas? sounds like a power slide to me do you know what they set your rear toe at?
