rear differential question
car is up on jacks, tires off, calipers off, rotors off, except rear rotors which is what i'm trying to remove right now but you have to take the axle nut off to remove correct? socket goes onto nut and whoops.. turns freely obviously duh. no brakes, e-brake, whole rear end off the ground so both axles turn. i go to use a breaker bar and shim it to the ground and pry up on the other nut on the other side and i would just pick up the whole rear end of that car before the axle nut breaks loose. what should i do? then.... i'm turning the rear rotors while it's in gear and notice that the drive shaft doesn't even move. recap: car is up on jacks, tires off, calipers off, rotors off, in gear, turn rear axles, driveshaft no go. comments?

hrmmm have you trying jamming something in between the lug studs? using the ground and studs to keep it from spinning? i jammed something in it, and used a hammer to break it loose, the sudden impact works wonders to keep stuff from spinning.

That is true, you do not need to remove the axel nut to remove the rear rotor, just the 2 philips head screws. They can be in there pretty good, i had to drill mine out. If you do take off the axel nut, don't forget to hammer out the part that is idented into the axel itself!

When did we veer off topic?
Do you think your diff is dead because when you turn one rotor the driveshaft doesn't rotate? If you have an open diff the driveshaft won't move, the other axle/rotor will rotate in the opposite direction instead. If there is more than one person kicking around rotate both rotors/axles in the same direction and see if the driveshaft rotates. Do you have an open diff or an LSD?

I get it!! Pattsy had to explain it.
Dude, you could have just said "trying to remove rear rotors, no ebrakes, no driveshaft"
Would have made ten times more sense.
Get under the car, wedge a screwdriver arcross the halfshaft bolts on the dif flange. Turn the halfshaft till the screwdriver hits something solid. Remove hubnut.
BTW.
You don't have to remove the hub to remove the rotor.
After the lugnuts are off, you just need to smack it with a big *** hammer (granted you removed the set screw)
