Rear diff blown... need your advice!

Ok so i blew my rear diff last night at the drag strip on the 4th pass. I'm not sure why it blew so soon, the car only had 100k miles and no real mods. Its a 91 N/A 5spd. So I want you imput on the diffuculty of these options.

1. do a t2 diff swap

2. rebuild the current diff

3. find another used one

Also i am wondering about the compatibility of the s4/s5 diffs and the s4t2/s5na diffs and the s5t2/s5na.
BTW my best time in the 1/4 last night was 16.9 @ 81.5 mhp (engine not running too good)

I heard the end shafts are slightly longer on the s5 than the s4.

also, I know if I got a T2 diff, it would be wider which would require differant axles but is the N/A driveshaft still compatable? Also is there a differance between s4/s5 t2 diffs?

The driveshaft would have to be remade, with the t2 rear mate - mazdatrix sells one or you could get a local place to make one.

The only diff between the s4/s5 t2 diffs is that the s5 is viscous while the s4 is clutch type.

The t2 diff will be stronger, I would suggest adapting the driveshaft and using t2 halfshafts to prevent breakage.

And just remember, even though your car only has 100K on it, it's still a minimum of 15 years old. If you abuse it, things will break

Ok, so which one is better: the s4T2 clutch type or s5 viscus type diff?

Also does anyone know what would be involved in installing a s4 N/A GXL LSD?

Thanks for the advice, Philip

IMO clutch type > viscous.

and I am pretty sure the s4 gxl rear end is DIRECT bolt in.

I really doubt you need a T2 diff for a 16 second car.

Something probably was just waiting to break in your current rear axle. I would just put a fresh N/A rear axle in there.
