Question Racing Beat header... does this sound right?

Hello everyone. Recently, piston eater helped me install a Racing Beat header I got offa Ebay on my car. I was wondering if we might have done something wrong becasue it is overbearingly loud now and very, very annoying (very buzzy).
It was a bit of a hack job... the precat came off (was melted and crumbling on the inside!), and we cut jsut hte end off hte pipe beacsue it fit inside the header pipe just right. We welded that up at about the right angle and the flanges on the header and the cat seemed to be resonably well aligned. Made some copper gaskets, bolted it all together, and now it is louder than all hell. I have attached an MP3 file of the car starting and then me revving it. Watch out, it starts quiet but gets REAL loud!

Anyways, I was wondering if you guys out there might be able to tell if anything sounds like it might be bad or leaking or some such thing? Its so loud I am considering putting the old exhaust manifold back on there even. Take a listen, I'd appreciate anything you could tell me.

btw the recording is from about 5 or 6 feet from behind the car.

I have an '84 GSL-SE with the Racing Beat long primary exhaust and the things sounds like crap. OK I take that back. The tone from the muffler is fine but I can hear a tinny sound from the header itself. There is no exhaust leak. I'm not sure if that is what you are referring to but mine is very annoying. I'm probably going to get rid of it.

What kind of mufflers are you using?

I have custom made (designed them myself) tip mufflers that were horrible sounding untill I packed them with fiberglass. (they're rebuildable. my design) It was like a chainsaw on crack and you couldn't hear yourself think inside the car. My situation was resolved by eliminating the ability of the exhaust pulses from resonating in the tips.

If you have hollow can mufflers that could be your problem. Hope that helps

Hehe, that's my friend's car -- he's not joking, swear to god! It's got an RB header, running to an aftermarket cat (just replaced due to failing smog), then to the stock cat-back... What the hell is wrong with it?

bloody hell

bloody hell! I didn't realize that the standard Microsoft Sound Recorder program records in RIFF wav format, whereas most mp3 encoders assume you are feeding it a PCM wav file! Buggar, everything is so difficult. Anyway, the correct version is attached to this message now (I couldnt edit the first post, so lets hope not too many more people try to open that horrible one!!)

Anyway, the I have an aftermarket cat, but I have no idea what it is. Everything behind that is completely stock. The sound is signifigantly louder/buzzier under acceleration on the road... its ok at 2,000 rpm while I'm jsut cruising but other than that.....

Seriuosly it sounds like the wall thickness of the tubibg is too thin or the system is not hung properly causing it to resonate and sound "tinny"

The exhaust pulse from a Wankel is a much sharper pop than the poofs from a piston engine. There is no valve head, stem, port bend, & water jacket to soften or restrict it. Those bangs used to hit that big heavy cast iron box to detune it. You are now express routing those shock waves down the tube. Now you know why RB also sells presilencers. You are now hearing where some of the Wankel's power comes from.

Welcome to owning a header. Now imagine that, coupled with a N1 single, and you get what I am used to. Have fun!!!

Sounds right to me. The stock mufflers will give it that really high pitched tone. I have the same setup with the exception of Racing Beat mufflers. My tone is deeper than yours, but it still sounds like a chain saw cutting through a rabid beaver! *Ouch!*

Enjoy!

A straight pipe off a header sounds amazing. (as in serious hearing damage)
Piston engine goes poof poof poof, and the Mazda goes bang bang bang..

I can really shock people when I am just cruising at like 4k RPM, then punch it. Who needs a radio when you can't even hear it?

Sounds to me like any other rotary with a header.
Once you allow those exhaust pulses travel at least 1/3 of the way through the system before they collide, you're going to get a LOT more noise.

I'm with rico on this one... LOUD daily driver.

RB header, 2.5" straight pipe with mitsu eclipse cat welded around it, (it looks legal anyways) Y to a pair of 2.5x12" resonators into 2.25" pipe, out to the 2.5" ID 4" tip mufflers.

My car club uses two way radios for cruising and I cant understand a word that said on mine when I'm above an idle. (I need to learn sign language or something) Cell phone can be heard when cruising on the free way under 2500rpm. (which means speed limit)
