quick cheap hp
there's this guy i know who drives a near stock civic who thinks he's hot ****, says he owns N/A RX-7s, well i raced him, spun off the line, pulled in 2nd then missed 3rd and gave up so he won by about 4 or 5 cars and thinks he's fast.
well i want shut his mouth for good next weekend, so here's what i have now, 86 GXL, 140,000 miles, original engine. only mod is a K&N. some crappy cat back, think 2" from the y pipe.
i'm gonna do the ATF trick since i don't think i'm at stock power levels to start with. make a mid pipe to run from the headers to Y pipe to eliminate cats and pre-muffler. one of my 6 ports is jammed, thinking of removing them. also might put some good tires my dad has sitting around on, they are 205/50/15 kuhmo victo racers, would that be too small? right now i think i have 205/60/15.
any other ways to get some more speed for cheap or free? car is already lightened up as much as i want to lighten it.

Remove the spare tire for the race, and make sure you only have like 1/2 a tank of gas. Also, make sure you shift correctly. Shift at 6500 RPM, launch at 3500RPM, and you should win. There is really nothing you could just buy at a parts store, so you will have to remove stuff to be faster. Also, cahnge your oil and plugs. Make sure the air in your tires is perfectly to the tire rating. Good luck!!
Advance the timing 25* for that run only, then move it back. You'll se the stock position of the bolt still engraved int eh CAS. ITs one 10mm bolt, carry a ratchet a 12" extension and a 10mm socket with you, jump out, pop the hood, turn it clockwise about 1/4" or a bit more, lock it down, race, adn return to stock later. Listen for detonation(rattling sound) but on an NA its unlikely unless you advance it all teh way to the end of the slot. ITs good for 10-20hp.

Consider disabling the EGR. And I've read posts that say launching at 5k with a smooth clutch release works very nicely.

Too much timing on a hot day can cause detonation, yes, but at night(presumably when the racing takes place) and for only a run or 2 shouldnt hurt anything. Leaving it advanced that far could cause early engine failure. Advancing timing up to 15* will never hurt anything.
