problems with starting

i'd really appreciate some help from you guys. the other day i was trying to finish up my stereo install. everything was wired up, but the amp wasn't turning on. so i disconnected it and then the car wouldn't start. so i got rid of every connection the amp and speakers would have to the car. now, the car won't even start. if i turn the key for just the battery, the electrical (head unit, lights, etc.) works, but when i try to turn the car over, all power is cut; nothing, nada, zilch. the only way i can return power is to disconnect the battery, let it sit, and then reconnect it. but the same thing just happens again. i checked the engine fuses, and they're all fine, but i'm worried i shorted something really important. anyone got any ideas?

Will the car start if you jump it from another car/battery?
